Darren Criss spills a few spoilers on 'Glee' 3D movie

MB:

He seems to have come out of left field, but he’s wowed the world over. “Glee” fans sure love him, and it looks like he’d be camping out on the show for a long time.

Darren Criss is the Warbler charmer Blaine Anderson, Kurt’s mentor-turned-boyfriend. As an openly gay character, Blaine has earned his stripes (or his Dalton Academy blazer, rather) as another positive role model for the kids who follow the show. And for the Fil-Am actor (whose mother hails from Cebu), that’s just one of the amazing things he’s been able to do since he got Gleek-ed.

As part “Glee,” Darren also now gets to expand his horizons. Although he’s had to put his recording career on hold in lieu of the show, Darren is still bent on pursuing this and is, in fact, signed to a record label. And aside from his theater experience, creating a Harry Potter musical Parody called “A Very Potter Musical,” and even a successful company called StarKid Productions (which produces online hit shows that have reportedly gained a global cult following), Darren now gets his movie debut.

Filmed during this summer’s “Glee” concert tour, “Glee The 3D Concert Movie” gives the Gleeks an exciting big screen experience. Why? Because they just can’t get enough, it seems.

“It is a great extension of the show, but it’s very real and it’s celebrated in real time with real people,” Darren notes. “There is a live catharsis that occurs that is just amazing. I think the film will be able to capture that for audiences who didn’t get a chance to make it to the show.”

It may be a daunting task to join a hit show and be expected to hold your own, but Darren has a unique perspective.

“I joined the show after it had become successful so I still have those moments when I [would] say to myself ‘you’re on Glee?’ (laughs). It is surreal and continuously humbling and bizarre that I am a part of this show. I never thought I would be part of it in my wildest dreams,” he shares.

Aside from having very relatable characters as well as great songs and production numbers, the allure of the show for Darren is being able to build characters from the ground up. “It was like starting a new show because Dalton Academy was a new entity with new people and all the other Warbler boys started from nothing too—we didn’t know what was going to happen.”

Apparently, at the start, the new addition to the cast didn’t get to interact with the kids in New Directions. “ It was like being on a new pilot and we became extremely close,” Darren recalls. “When I did get to know them, I found that they were wonderful people. I felt very welcome.”

Jude Law sows an epidemic of fear in 'Contagion'

MB:

Considered one of Britain’s finest actors, Jude Law stars as an enterprising journalist who has an agenda of his own, in Warner Bros.' new, gripping thriller “Contagion” from director Steven Soderbergh.

“Contagion” follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.

As the virus rapidly advances—invisible, relentless and indiscriminate—a different kind of contagion appears, introduced by outsider journalist Alan Krumwiede (Law), who is convinced the government is withholding the truth and maybe even a possible cure. Although many of the issues Krumwiede raises are valid, his methods fan the grassfire of alarm and, says producer Gregory Jacobs, “contribute to the film’s atmosphere of shifting tones and levels, at once a drama, a mystery and a thriller.”

“Part of the story is the way in which information spreads along similar pathways to that of a virus: who gets it and how it moves forward, how it’s altered as it moves from one host to another or one organization to the next. And Krumwiede is the face of that idea,” says Soderbergh. “That was our focus throughout the movie, treating information like a baton that gets passed from one scene to the next. There are so many interesting tributaries. In this situation, it’s a lethal problem because misinformation can kill.”

While the international medical community searches for a cure, Alan Krumwiede pursues an agenda of his own. Combining a genuine reporter’s instinct with a pathological distrust of all things official and a flair for the dramatic, he commits his popular blog to exposing the truth about the growing epidemic…as he sees it.

“His demand for the truth could be seen as heroic,” says Law. “He believes people have a right to know and that information should be shared, especially when it’s something on this scale, and he was the first to break the story of a man dying on a Tokyo bus, who turned out to be one of the virus’ first victims. He has the courage of his convictions but his pride and ego often get in the way. He casts too broad a net for his stories and doesn’t always care about the repercussions of what he puts out there.”
“Krumwiede is not always wrong,” Soderbergh points out.

But neither is he always right. And what he broadcasts takes on a life of its own as people desperate for answers turn to his blog. As the disease continues to proliferate, so does his subscriber base, from modest beginnings to 2 million, then 12 million people. “There are always conspiracy theories that percolate around significant events,” says screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. “And just as a virus begins with one person and spreads, Krumwiede becomes the ‘index patient’ for what becomes a parallel epidemic of fear and panic.”

Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank is Philippines' entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category of Oscar Awards

PEP:

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank will represent the Philippines in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Academy Awards.

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) was able to confirm this yesterday, September 14, through a source from the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP).

The source from the FAP revealed that majority of the members chose Ang Babae sa Septic Tank over other short-listed films. This will allow the Filipino film to vie for a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2012 Oscars.

The Eugene Domingo-starrer was able to beat the period drama Rosario, prison drama Presa, coming-of-age story Senior Year, family drama Ikaw Ang Pag-ibig, and the horror film Dalaw. The family drama Thelma and the horror comedy Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington were also reviewed but did not make the cut.

In an online interview, Eugene told PEP, "Marlon Rivera called me up and told me about the Oscar news and I laughed so hard because I thought it's crazy!

"We were also ecstatic until we all realized it is a big honor that definitely needs a bigger campaign! We will pray for it.

"I hope that the 'woman in the septic tank' gets to wear a gown and walk on the red carpet at the Kodak Theatre! Who knows?"

This satirical film is directed by first-time filmmaker Marlon Rivera and written by Chris Martinez.

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank won five major awards during the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival held in July 2011.

Eugene was named Best Actress, Marlon Rivera won as Best Director, Chris Martinez earned Best Screenplay; it bagged the Audience choice award, and was chosen as the Best Film in the New Breed category.

The movie chronicles a day in the life of misguided indie filmmakers as they plan to produce a movie they believe will earn an Oscar.

The characters of JM de Guzman, Kean Cipriano, and Cai Cortez brainstorm about different treatments of a story that they will present to a diva actress (Eugene Domingo).

The film also features performances by Cherry Pie Picache and Mercedes Cabral.

Madonna to critics: review my movie, not me

MALAYA:

Madonna on Monday said she said she doesn’t mind any criticism of her filmmaking abilities, so long as it is directed at her movie and not at herself.

The pop star told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she is promoting her second film "W.E.," she had to earn her reputation as a musician and she expected to do the same as a film director.

"I had the same kind of pressure when I began my music career," Madonna told reporters. "I was nervous, and I didn’t know what to expect, and people didn’t know what to expect."

The film, which premiered at the Venice film festival and is screening at Toronto, has been characterized by critics as visually stunning, but lacking in focus and burdened by weak performances.

"I can tell when people are reviewing my film and when they’re reviewing me personally," Madonna said when asked whether she cared about what critics thought. "So when they stick to the film, then I do care."

"W.E." stars Abbie Cornish as a young New Yorker in the 1990s who becomes infatuated with the 1930s marriage of King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson, played by Andrea Riseborough. It follows Madonna’s first feature, 2008’s "Filth and Wisdom," which performed poorly at the box office.

Britain’s The Guardian newspaper was the harshest among the critics, giving the film just one star out five, while the Daily Telegraph gave a more positive three star review.

The budget of "W.E." is estimated to be around $15 million, and it hits movie theaters in the United States in December, prompting one journalist to ask Madonna about her Oscar hopes for the film.

"My legs and my fingers are crossed," she quipped. – Reuters

My Neighbor's Wife heats up the big screen with the lead stars' chemistry and sex appeal

PEP:

The stars of My Neighbor's Wife—Dennis Trillo, Lovi Poe, Jake Cuenca and Carla Abellana—heat up the big screen with their individual and combined sex appeal to unravel a story about marital infidelity between two modern young couples.

Written and directed by Jun Lana, My Neighbor's Wife is a sexy drama produced by Regal Films. It is rated R-13 and approved without cuts by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.

Jake and Carla play Couple No. 1. Bullet and Jasmine are so rich that the wife considers her husband's job as co-owner of a bar just his hobby. Jasmine spends most of her time shopping either with her mom or her equally wealthy and bored friend (played by Dimples Romana). Bullet forbids her from working so she can tend to him and to their son Tommy (Yogo Singh) full time.

Dennis and Lovi, on the other hand, are working-class Couple No. 2, Aaron and Giselle. He's a medical-school graduate but instead of taking the board exams, he gets into failed business ventures and has to get a loan from Bullet to finance his latest venture, an auto-repair shop. She's a fairly hard-working medical representative but she still can't afford the little luxuries (e.g., jewelry and designer goods) that she longs for. Giselle wants these luxury items so she won't look shabby in the company of her husband's rich friends.

The lead characters live in one condominium but on different floors, with Couple No. 2 renting Couple No. 1's spare unit. Bullet and Aaron are best friends, which explains why the former is very generous with the latter. Their wives have become bosom buddies as well, so Jasmine also shares her blessings with Giselle, including a pair of earrings that would play a pivotal part in the discovery of the first case of infidelity.

Like any couple, they have their own share of marital woes. Bullet and Jasmine bitterly fight because of his philandering ways while Aaron and Gisele perpetually argue over money. While Bullet finds sexual satisfaction from his flings and Jasmine has turned cold on him, Aaron and Giselle continue to have a healthy and an even enviable sex life.

Giselle, by her own admission, is good in bed so Aaron willingly overlooks her shortcomings. Even while he was still punishing her for an indiscretion involving his best friend, Aaron still can't resist her charms. But when it was his turn to fool around with a supposedly conservative partner, he exhibits the same willingness and passion.

There is no doubt about the degree of heat brought to the big screen by the lead stars.

Both Dennis and Jake share the zeal and commitment of their female counterparts but their talents are under-used since their characters are poorly developed. For starters, their being best friends and their courtship of their respective wives weren't properly established so the actors aren't able to explore other facets of their characters.

How Martin Escudero landed the role of Remington in Zombadings

SPOT:

Zombadings director Raymond Lee calls Martin Escudero “a revelation” in this never-before-seen clip showing the actor’s try-out to play the part of Remington. The hit movie’s lead role—a homophobic youngster faced with a curse that turns him into a short-shorts-wearing, tiny-tee-sporting bakla—was admittedly hard to cast, Lee said. It was a comedic role after all, one that needed to be played by someone “who’s very good at physical comedy but hindi OA,” and Escudero’s “brooding” roles in the past almost immediately disqualified him from being cast in the film.

Then, the audition happened. The 19-year-old actor surprised Lee and Zombadings writer-director Jade Castro with his then undiscovered knack for physical comedy and timing, prompting them to wonder why the actor hasn’t done more funny roles before. “We rediscovered him,” Lee said. For Escudero, it was just a matter of determination. “Na-inlove ako sa script eh, nagustuhan ko yung pelikula..” Escudero said. “Sabi ko gagawan ko ng paraan para ako yung makuha.”

Even before the award-deserving gay flick Zombadings 1: Patayin Sa Shokot si Remington hit the cinemas in its commercial run last week, you probably already noticed actor Martin Escudero. With stints in the reality artista search StarStruck, his role in TV 5’s Babaeng Hampaslupa; and appearances in films like My Monster Mom, Mag-ingat Ka Sa...Kulam, and Shake Rattle and Roll 12, you could say it was slowly but surely the start of bigger things to come.

Then, ta-dah! Before you could shriek "Awaaaaard!" Escudero landed the role many actors ahead of him in the game could only dream of: the landmark role of Remington, homophobic youngster-turned-bakla against his macho, manly will. After its hit premiere at last month's Cinemalaya, the campy comedy, written by Raymond Lee, Michiko Yamamoto, and Jade Castro (also the director), propelled the fresh-faced, "best friend"-playing supporting actor to lead role status. Critics have named him an actor to watch for, commending his perfectly delivered punch lines and impeccable portrayal of Remington.

In Zombadings, the young Remington, who has a penchant for teasing homosexuals, is cursed by a mysterious cross-dressing gay man—he is to grow up to become a bakla himself. Fast forward 15 years and the curse takes effect. As Remington undergoes a transformation, his town is terrorized by a serial killer victimizing gays. Remington could be next, so with the help of his family and friends, he seeks to put an end to the senseless killing spree.

Only three days after the movie’s opening on August 31, aptly called “National Zomba Day,” a dozen more screenings were added to cater to the overwhelming response from moviegoers, bringing up to 69 the total number of thaters where the movie is playing. Now, if this doesn’t make you want to dash to the nearest cinema right now to see for yourself what the hype about Escudero's acting and the movie is all about, we don’t know what will.

14th edition of Cine Europa will kick off on September 8

PEP:

On its 14th year, Cine Europa, the annual tradition of bringing quality European films to Manila, is now back. It will also be shown in Cagayan de Oro and Cebu.

Cine Europa opens in Manila on September 8, Thursday, with public screenings from September 9-18 in Shangri-La Plaza and then moves on to Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro, from September 23-25, and finally, to Cebu's Ayala Center Onstage, from September 20-October 2.

From just about 11 films in 1998, Cine Europa is now bringing 19 films from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

This year's Cine Europa has a very good mix of films of varying genres—from comedy, drama to history and thriller and, at the same time, showcases European's cultural tapestry and human experiences—love for country and family, migration, relationships, perseverance, struggle, hope, courage, faith, and victory.

Revenge and retribution is the name of the game in Austria's Die kleinen Räuber (Little Robbers), where siblings Robby and Louise attempt to rob the bank that forcibly banished their parents from their apartment after their father lost his job; and Belgium's Long Weekend, where two ex-factory workers kidnap their former boss to make him pay for the damages he caused his workers when his company went bankrupt.

Bulgaria's Letter to America follows Ivan, who visits ailing best friend Kamen's hometown in Bulgaria to seek an old song that might save her life; while Denmark's Flugten (The Escape) tells the tale of Danish journalist Rikke, who escapes after being kidnapped by an Afghan terrorist group—and encounters one of its members who threatened to kill her after her career has finally taken off.

In Italy's La Masseria Delle Allodole (The Lark Farm), brothers Aram and Assadour, who have not seen each other in a long time, attempt to reunite but get stuck in the travails of a war between countries. German period piece Goethe! chronicles German poet Johann's love affair with the beautiful yet feisty Lotte Buff, which ultimately inspired his literary masterpiece, The Sorrows of Young Werther.

Little Greek Godfather from Greece tragicomically tells the tale of California-bred Alex, who acts as a godfather to a child of an aspiring parliamentary deputy, in an attempt to prove himself a worthy son to his own father. Finland's Prinsessa revolves around the life of manic depressive Anna Lappalainen, who heals and brings joy to her fellow patients with her pleasant presence and personality despite being stigmatized by society for her condition.

Poll: 'Harry Potter' picked top summer movie

GMA NEWS:

The summer blockbuster movie season comes to an end this weekend, and already moviegoers on one website have decided their favorite flick of the period -- "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2."

Voters in a new poll released on Thursday by NextMovie.com had the British boy wizard casting his spell over nearly 60 percent of voters for favorite summer flick, easily surpassing "X-Men: First Class" with only 15 percent of the tally.

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was No. 3 in the survey with comedy "Bridesmaids" and thriller "Super-8" rounding out the top five in that order.

Fans voted the kiss between "Potter" characters Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger as their favorite moment of the final "Potter" film in the survey of more than 25,000 votes.

The biggest bomb of the summer was superhero film "The Green Lantern," starring Ryan Reynolds, with 41 percent, while sci-fi ape thriller "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was picked the summer's biggest surprise hit.

Comedy "The Hangover Part 2," the much-anticipated sequel to 2009's box-office smash "The Hangover," was voted the second most disappointing film of the summer, but in an odd twist, it managed to nab the title of favorite comedy with 35 percent of voters favoring it over No. 2 comedy, "Bridesmaids."

NextMovie also asked its readers who was the "Hottest Babe," and "Friends with Benefits" star Mila Kunis beat out "Cowboys & Aliens" leading lady Olivia Wilde by a 4 percent margin -- 31 percent to 27 percent.

Among men, "Captain America" actor Chris Evans won the "Best Abs" title, fighting off stiff competition from the likes of "Conan the Barbarian" actor Jason Momoa and Chris Hemworth in "Thor."

While boy wizard Harry Potter may have thundered ahead in this year's rankings, fans are already excited for next summer's big releases, with more than 76 percent selecting "Snow White and the Huntsman," starring Hemsworth and "Twilight's" Kristen Stewart, as the film they are most looking forward to seeing.

Pixar plans films on dinosaurs, the mind

INQUIRER:

Pixar Animation Studios announced Saturday it was planning two new features for 2013 and 2014 – one on dinosaurs and the other on the mysteries of the human brain.

Disney and Pixar Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter unveiled the new projects during the D23 expo for Disney fans in Anaheim south of Los Angeles.

Neither of the films, which will follow next year’s “Brave” and “Monsters University” due out in summer 2013, have titles yet, but the first will be devoted to dinosaurs and directed by “Finding Nemo” screenwriter Bob Peterson.

Rather than winding back time to the dinosaur era, the film due out for Christmas 2013 will work off the premise that dinosaurs never disappeared.

“In our movie, dinosaurs continue to live,” Peterson told fans at the three-day expo.

For summer 2014, the studio plans to release “the untitled Pixar movie that takes you inside the mind,” said its director Pete Docter, who was behind “Up” and “Monsters, Inc.”

“We are excited to take you to a world that everybody knows but where no one has ever been: the world inside your own mind,” he said.

During the presentation, Pixar revealed footage from “Brave,” its first fairy tale. It will be the studio’s first film with a female protagonist – a Scottish princess.

Pixar, which celebrates its 25th birthday this year, has become one of the most profitable studios in Hollywood with titles like “Toy Story,” “Ratatouille” and “Up.”

The studio saw its first setback this year when critics snubbed “Cars 2″ and theatre-goers followed suit, with worldwide ticket receipts totalling just over $476 million – a disappointment by Pixar standards.

'Cars 2' adds new dimension in racing excitement with 3D!

MB:

One of the technical advancements that has emerged and been embraced in the world of entertainment since the release of the original “Cars” film in 2006 is 3D digital exhibition, and “Cars 2” is the third Pixar feature to utilize this popular format.

This latest release from Disney/Pixar (following “Up” and “Toy Story 3”) allows audiences to experience the fun and excitement of being at the races, immersing themselves in the film’s beautifully designed and meticulously rendered environments.

“I love 3D probably more than any other director,” says director John Lasseter. “I took my wedding pictures in 3D! Our short film ‘Knick Knack’ that we made in 1989 was made in 3D before there were any 3D theaters out there. And I always felt our medium of computer animation is perfectly matched to it.

“‘Cars 2’—it’s really made with 3D in mind,” continues Lasseter. “And 3D for a Pixar film is not about all the coming-at-you stuff; it’s just about making the world that much more believable and immersive, like a window into that world. You get invested in it. And I think that when you see ‘Cars 2’ in 3D, there is so much thought put into the elements: Things are very reflective to make it very glitzy and glamorous and sexy and cool. But it’s also thought out, because the lighting adds a tremendous amount of depth in 3D. Wet streets, shiny cars, shiny buildings. It’s like, wow!”

Adds co-director Brad Lewis, “We’re really crafting the film to take advantage of the 3D medium. John has been so taken by the way 3D can enhance different types of films. On ‘Cars 2,’ our 3D stereoscopic supervisor Bob Whitehill has been working on a parallel track as the movie was being laid out, and everybody is ultimately thinking about what it could be in 3D. It used to be that 3D was something that happened at the end of our process, but it has become integrated. When we see something that we think would look phenomenal in 3D, we start exploring ways to move the camera to make it even better. It’s definitely in our eyepiece as we approach these films—3D can add depth and dimension and give the story a greater sense of drama.”

“Cars 2” will also be presented in IMAX 3D in select theaters, providing a unique, larger-than-life movie-going experience.

In “Cars 2,” star racecar Lightning McQueen and his best friend, the incomparable tow truck Mater jump-start a new adventure to exotic new lands stretching across the globe.

The duo are joined by a hometown pit crew from Radiator Springs when they head overseas to support Lightning as he competes in the first-ever World Grand Prix, a race created to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the finish line is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and bombshells when Mater is mistakenly ensnared in an intriguing escapade of his own: international espionage.
