GMA Pinoy TV Launches “Power ng Pinoy” this September

GMA PR:

A new weekly television show that will introduce and salute successful Filipino individuals, groups and corporations will be launched on September 2011 and shown every Sunday nights thereafter through GMA Pinoy TV.

Dubbed Power ng Pinoy, the weekly 30-minute documentary program will feature Filipino shakers and movers that made and continue to make a difference in the lives of Filipinos in the U.S. and in the Philippines.

It will also feature entertaining side stories that would strengthen and further solidify the bond of the Filipino community in general.

Power ng Pinoy seeks to empower and provide inspiration to fellow Filipinos in their continuous perseverance and sacrifice to realize their American dream while educating viewers on some of our history’s significant achievers and greatest treasures.

A unique and valuable highlight of the show is its primary emphasis on how featured guests give back to the community as it strongly believes that true success is not only about achieving one’s goals and dreams but also about sharing what one achieves with the society in general and the Filipino community in particular.

For its pilot episode, Power ng Pinoy is slated to present the humble beginnings of Dado Banatao, who was born to a rice farmer and housekeeper in small barrio in Cagayan Valley, where he used to walk barefoot to school in dirt roads and, because of hard work and dedication, is now a veteran entrepreneur and venture capitalist in the Silicon Valley, California.

Others in the line-up of featured stories include ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” perennial champion Cheryl Burke, the FAA-certified armless Filipina pilot Jessica Cox, Gawad Kalinga board member Joe Millares, the first Filipino UC Berkeley Professor Ben de Lumen, Milpitas, California City Mayor Jose Estevez and “Project Runway” finalist Jay Sario, among others.

Power ng Pinoy is co-produced by GMA Pinoy TV and Prowave Media, a wholly Filipino-owned media company based in Silicon Valley. For more information about the show, please visit the show\'s website at www.powerngpinoy.tv or Facebook page at http://facebook.com/PowerNgPinoy.

Survivor Ready!? Richard Gutierrez's ultimate challenge

PHIL STAR:

Richard is preparing for the upcoming season of GMA 7’s Survivor Philippines.

“It’s an exciting season and I can’t wait to begin my work (as host),” he says. “But there’s a bit of nervousness and excitement. I’ll be (in the island) for around 40 to 45 days and (living there) won’t be that easy. However, I now have expectations (and the idea of) how it goes. Last year, I found it difficult because it was my first. Now, I already experienced (how it was like doing the show). Things will be easy. I’m more aware of possibilities and what might happen. For this year, there will be more twists. We have a good line-up of celebrity castaways. The challenges are bigger (and more difficult).”

Asked to give details on the castaways’ island playground, Richard replies jokingly, “Dyan lang sa kanto ng Maldives.”

Before the castaways reach the undisclosed tropical island devoid of modern amenities, Richard and the Survivor team have to acclimatize first and try the challenges.

“They ask for my inputs,” he says. “I don’t demand (that they should be included). As much as I can, I work with them well. I also let them decide because it‘s part of the producers’ job.”

Although Survivor Philippines is a reality-show where every moment or action is caught on cam unadulterated, Richard remains bounded but not dictated by the script.

“Of course, there’s a script we have to follow (and instructions for the challenges are stated in it),” he shares. “But I can put all of those into my own words. It serves as a guideline. There’s no Take Two. As much as I can, I don’t want to make a mistake during spiels. I have to memorize everything. I should not miss any detail and the safety precautions of each challenge since I’m the only one who can stop the game. If someone gets injured (or needs something), I should know what to do (or say). There are producers who take care of the tasks and they give me updates like these castaways fought and this what happened in the camp.”

Any time now, Richard is all set to fly to that island paradise and assures everyone that “we will try to make things even better this year.”

Kapuso Guide: KUNG AAGAWIN MO ANG LANGIT

GMA PR:

Beginning September 19, GMA Network fires up its unbeatable afternoon block with an absorbing and provocative drama series that promises to steal the televiewers’ hearts with the premiere of KUNG AAGAWIN MO ANG LANGIT.

Introducing the fresh and promising love triangle of Michelle Madrigal as the ambitious and self-assertive Bridgitte Samonte , Mike Tan as the happy-go-lucky Jonas Alejandro and Carla Abellana as the unassuming and kindhearted Ellery Martinez, this original offering follows the intertwined lives of two women bound by forces of envy, love and revenge.

After emerging into stardom through several performances in various afternoon and primetime soaps, Starstruck 2 Ultimate Male Survivor and one of Kapuso Network’s homegrown matinee idols Mike Tan shares billing with these two capable actresses as he proves he has the chops to play the role lead in this compelling TV series.

Completing the cast of this upcoming afternoon drama are Ricky Davao as Delfin Martinez, Ellery’s devoted father; Shamaine Buencamino as Marissa Martinez, Ellery’s sympathetic mother; Ces Quesada as Leila Samonte, Bridgitte’s conniving aunt; Paolo Ballesteros as Aloha, Bridgitte’s gay friend-confidante; Jan Marini as Sonia Tercero, Ellery’s loyal bestfriend ; Kevin Santos as Lester Feliciano, Jonas’ friend-confidante; Will Devaughn as Waldy Buenafe, Ellery’s childhood friend and secret lover; Steph Henares as Janice Baluarte, Wally’s close friend; and newcomer RJ Salvador as Aaron.

Kung Aagawin Mo Ang Langit tells the story of highschool pals Ellery (Carla) and Bridgitte (Michelle). Despite the apparent differences in their social status, the two girls become best of friends as they find themselves both sharing the same house and same set of parents. Ellery’s father decided to adopt Bridgitte when her parents passed away.

As the years pass, Ellery fulfills her dream of becoming a teacher while Bridgitte turns into a fashion designer. While partying with friends, Bridgitte meets Jonas (Mike) and instantly falls head over heels in love with the charming bachelor. Much to her dismay, Jonas only has eyes for Ellery. The two hit it off right away, so when Jonas proposed marriage to Ellery, she readily accepted. Bridgitte, who is secretly hurting and overly jealous, gives way to their romance but bears a heavy grudge against Ellery.

The couple’s marriage goes through a rough patch when Ellery discovers she cannot conceive a child. Desperate to have a baby, they resort to in vitro fertilization with Bridgitte gladly volunteering to be the surrogate mother in the hopes of winning Jonas’ love and attention. Everything seems to be working perfectly until Ellery gets into a car accident that leaves her in a coma.

Jonas and Ellery’s parents are completely devastated by news that she may never wake up. Several months passed with Bridgitte finally giving birth to their baby while Ellery is still unresponsive in her hospital bed. Bridgitte uses this opportunity to force Jonas to marry her for the sake of their child and urges him to annul his marriage with Ellery due to incapacity of wifely duties.

GMA-7 docu 'Philippine Treasures' to explore the history that inspired Amaya

GMA NEWS:

When 24 Oras news anchor Mel Tiangco came face to face with the Golden Tara, considered by some experts as one of the most spectacular finds in Philippine archeology, she was intrigued. Was it worth going all the way to Chicago, USA to see?

“She was very small!" Tiangco told GMA News Online about the statue, showing its height with her thumb and index finger. “I thought, ‘What's spectacular about this thing?’"

But the Golden Tara grew on her after she spent a few moments with it. She said she couldn't help but be entranced by the object's “serenity."

Depicting the image of a Vajryana Buddhism deity, the Golden Tara now resides in the Field Museum in Chicago, USA, far from Agusan del Sur where it was originally found. Image screencapped from Philippine Treasures

Then you fall in love with her," said Tiangco. “The more you look at her, the more she becomes beautiful."

The 5-inch-tall golden statue shares the section with precious gems and diamonds. But since it’s displayed miles away from Agusan del Sur, where it was found, few Filipinos get to witness the item's beauty.

This Sunday night, however, viewers will be treated not only to the sight of the Golden Tara from its current home at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, but also to stories of other intriguing historical finds from all over the country.

GMA News and Public Affairs will air ‘Philippine Treasures," a special documentary about some of the most important relics from the Philippines’ literally rich pre-colonial past. The documentary is hosted by Mel Tiangco, with reporting by Mariz Umali, Cesar Apolinario, Tina Panganiban-Perez, and John Consulta.

Program Manager Lee Joseph Castel said that he got the idea for the documentary after a spontaneous trip to the National Museum.

“Na-fascinate ako masyado sa mga artifacts doon, so naisip ko parang wala pang gumagawa ng special tungkol sa historical artifacts dito sa Pilipinas," Castel told GMA News Online. He also shared that the National Museum itself is also suffering from the lack of funds.

Motivated to change the perception that Filipinos lack a sense of history, the production staff withstood long journeys and heavy rains, and even braved rebel-infested areas, in search of the country’s almost-forgotten treasures.

'9/11 The Day the World Changed' Back to Back with 'The Death of Bin Laden'

iGMA:

September 11, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack that shook the world.

GMA News TV commemorates the tragedy with a back-to-back airing of two powerful documentaries by the BBC: "9/11 The Day the World Changed" and "The Death of Bin Laden". GMA has the exclusive right to broadcast these in the Philippines.

With narration dubbed in Filipino to reach a wider audience, this 2½-hour back- to-back special gives viewers inside stories on the 9/11 attack and the eventual death of its mastermind. Catch them Sunday night, September 11, from 8 to 10:30 pm on GMA News TV Channel 11.

9/11 THE DAY THE WORLD CHANGED: 8-10 PM, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

"9/11 The Day the World Changed" takes viewers back to the morning of September 11, 2001 when attacks on the United States killed nearly 3,000 people from over 70 countries. The world watched in terror as hijacked passenger planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and an open field in Pennsylvania. This documentary reveals the decisive moments of 9/11. Going behind the scenes, it shows how the events unfurled in the aircraft, the offices, the bunkers and the military headquarters as the US President, his advisers, security services and the military tried to piece together what was happening, who was attacking America and what was going to happen next.

THE DEATH OF BIN LADEN: 10-10:30 PM, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

"The Death of Bin Laden" shows how America tracked down and killed the world's most wanted man - Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda's leader and mastermind of the 9/11 attack. Despite the $25M bounty on his head, Bin Laden evaded the forces of the United States and its allies for almost a decade. From accounts of eyewitnesses, victims of Al Qaeda's terror, and military and intelligence insiders, the documentary traces the events that led to the US Special Forces' raid of the hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan where Bin Laden was killed last May 2, 2011. -- Text and photos courtesy of GMA Network

This week, the drama intensifies after Alona (Alicia Meyer) gave a startling confession of how she masterminded the killing of Eden’s mother Alicia (Angelu de Leon). Both Eden and Sig were shocked on this revelation and realized that their constant bickering and fighting were all rooted in lies and completely baseless.

Sig confronted his mother and escorted Alona to jail. Now that her greatest adversary is behind bars, will Eden’s woes and misfortunes come to an end? Will Eden and Sig patch up their differences and rekindle their romance?

Meanwhile, Ahmed discovers Eden’s plans to move to another country and start anew. Still hopelessly in love with his bestfriend, Ahmed will do anything to get Eden back into his life. Will Ahmed succeed in winning back Eden’s love?

What will happen to the complicated love triangle of Eden, Sig and Ahmed? And if Eden and Sig reunite, will Ahmed yield or will he fight for the woman he loves?

Under the direction of Ricky Davao, SISID airs weekdays after Sinner or Saint on GMA’s Dramarama sa Hapon.--Text and photo courtesy of GMA Network

GMA-7's Spooky Nights Presents: Munting Mahadera!

PEP:

"For two Saturdays this September, multi-awarded actor Roderick Paulate topbills the next horror-comedy feature of GMA-7's Spooky Nights, Munting Mahadera.

"Roderick has been admired for his performance in Munting Heredera, the Kapuso network's top-rating primetime drama. With co-stars Luz Valdez and Barbara Miguel, he now guarantees laughter and fright as he portrays a closet gay named Rody in a spoof of the drama in Spooky Nights Presents: Munting Mahadera.

"Munting Mahadera is about Rody's struggle to raise his children as a single father, maintain his macho image for his mother and keep his biggest secret--that he is a homosexual.

"Recently parted ways with his wife, Rody goes back to live with his mother, Felicia (Luz), and takes along with him his twin daughters: the mischievous Bembem and the well-behaved Jenjen (both played by Barbara).

"Rody's presumptuous and nosy mom believes that there is a dark secret behind his breakup with his wife. Thus, Felicia tries everything to trick him into confessing but Rody never admits until a magical creature comes out of his closet and makes him come clean.

"Meanwhile, Bembem finds herself a new playground in the old and big house of Felicia. She ignores her grandmother's instruction never to enter a certain room and accidentally frees an evil hag (Odette Khan), who has long been staying there. The hag searches for someone to live with her in the world of shadows and soon aims for Jenjen to be the one.

"Can the evil hag snatch Jenjen away from Rody and Bembem? How will Felicia react upon discovering Rody's secret? Who is the real "mahadera"--Rody, Felicia, Bembem, Jenjen or the evil hag?

"While Munting Heredera makes viewers cry, this story about obedience, acceptance and familial love definitely offers thrill and humor on the first two Saturdays of September.

"Completing the cast of Spooky Nights Presents: Munting Mahadera are Soxy Topacio as Domeng and Ervic Vijandre as Carlos.

"Catch Spooky Nights Presents: Munting Mahadera before Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho on September 3 and 10 on GMA-7."
