Jennylyn Mercado is new co-host of reality talent search Protégé; ex-boyfriend Dennis Trillo says he has moved on

PEP:

"Excited ako kasi di ba, reality show.

I think this is a new world for me.

More and more Filipino music artists are auditioning for Protege: The Battle of the Big Break

More and more Filipino music artists are auditioning for the newest singing superstar search on Philippine TV, Protégé: The Battle for the Big Break! Last weekend, Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija and San Fernando, Pampanga became the sites of the massive gatherings of Pinoy talents.

Despite the typhoon, hopefuls from different provinces lined up at the Protégé call-out that happened inside Nueva Ecija Pacific Mall. Applicants braved the storm and came all the way from Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Bataan, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Quezon, Aparri, Cagayan and Isabela just to make it to the auditions and perform in front of Mentor Jay-R.

A female vocal quartet composed of siblings from Isabela shook up JayR with their acapella and beat-box rendition of Lady Gaga's Telephone.

Among the highlights was when the RnB prince went to the house of a prospective protégé in Cabanatuan to ask for his father's approval on the audition. To Jay-R's surprise, the young man he was looking for was not home that day. According to his father who had a stroke, his son went to Baguio for a personal reason. Later that day, Jay-R found out that the man he was supposed to invite personally was already in NE Pacific Mall for the Protégé search. The young mentor witnessed a dramatic moment as the old man gave his approval. Other heartwarming and heart-wrenching events unfolded in Cabanatuan as JayR searched for his three potential protégés.

SM City in San Fernando, Pampanga was the next stop for the Protégé Call-out, where the number of applicants was higher by an astounding 300% than in Nueva Ecija. Mentor Rey Valera was challenged with the pool of talents he found in the city. Rap groups, rock bands, duos, boy and girl bands, and other musicians stormed the venue.

Pampangeños and music artists from Bataan, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Tarlac and Zambales fought for the three Protégé spots allotted for Rey Valera. The overwhelming showcase of talents in the city stirred up the audition results, and for the first time in this "hunt" stage, a shocking decision from a mentor was made.

Four more cities are about to become the hot spots for Filipino musical ingenuity: Davao (SM City Davao) on August 5 with Jaya, Dagupan (CSI Mall) on August 7 wth Joey Generoso of Side A Band, Cagayan de Oro (SM CDO) on August 10 with Aiza Seguerra and Manila (SM MOA Music Hall) on August 12 with Gloc9. --Text and photo courtesy of GMA Network
