Paris Hilton, the morning after

GMA NEWS:

Why is Paris Hilton so popular?

This was a question I was trying to answer on Wednesday, at the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City, while waiting for the Century Properties-hosted Paris Hilton press conference to start.

Inside the Manila Pen Conservatory were media of all sorts—magazine fashion editors, TV showbiz reporters, wire agency correspondents and even Cecile Van Straten of the popular blog Chuvaness.

Why were we willing to wait an extra hour or so (Paris was upstairs, “primping" for the press con, the organizers said) for the infamous socialite?

Stars aren’t blind

First launched into infamy in 2003 through a homemade sex video with her then boyfriend, Paris has since made an empire built around her name.

Before you point out how silly that is, remember that Paris Hilton has made a fortune from reality shows, scents named after her, a bag and clothing line, a one-hit wonder song (“Stars Are Blind," if you didn’t know) and even a Paris iTunes app. This “empire" is on top of the one that she’s had since birth as a member of the Hilton family of hoteliers.

Paris Hilton is one of the first celebrities in Hollywood to be famous for being, well, famous.

Photographer's favorite

As far as the Philippines is concerned, that doesn’t really make sense. Sure, we’ve had our share of celebuspawn (celebrity offspring) who are relevant simply because of their last names. But none of them can even dream of reaching the stardom that Paris has reached.

A testament to that is how the local news outfits flipped when word spread that Paris had lost two iPhones/iPods/iPads (the different media organizations didn’t really seem to agree on this one) en route to Manila for a business trip from August 14 to 18.

Amid the fanfare and hype that surrounds her, the 5’8" looker doesn’t even flinch. It’s not just that she’s used to the frenzy—she loves it.

For example, the moment Paris stepped on stage during the press conference, she owned it. Despite the throng of snap-happy photographers equipped with blinding flash triggers, she winked, smiled and flirted with the camera without batting an eyelash.

The photographers loved it and I couldn’t blame them. In a culture where humility (even the false kind) is a virtue, the tenacity in which Paris embraces her stardom is strangely refreshing.

The band of photographers at the presser actually groaned when organizers announced that it was time for Paris to leave for another gig.

Her new BFF Manny

What makes the 30-year-old star especially interesting in the Philippines is her sudden friendship with world-renowned boxer and Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao and his wife, Jinkee.

Word from the Twitterverse is that the threesome first met a few months ago during Manny’s fight against Shane Mosley.

"Wow! Such an honor to be brought on stage by Manny & his wife Jinkee after the fight. Can't wait to visit them when I go to the Philippines," Paris tweeted post-fight on May 7.

Thus, it didn’t come as a surprise when Paris took time out of her busy schedule on Tuesday evening to attend a dinner party hosted by the Pacquiaos.

The day after the party, Paris posted pictures of herself and the Pacquiaos on her official website and became a Twitter trending topic Wednesday morning, a few hours before the Manila Pen press conference.

Playing her cards right

Throughout her stay in the Philippines, Paris was two things: nice and consistent, or maybe, even consistently nice.

She was not shy with the compliments—from the food to the hospitality and even Filipino women—everything was announced proudly on Twitter or in one of her many media events.

Most people might think of Paris as just another pretty, dumb blonde (myself included) but they would be surprised to know that this media mogul is actually more business-savvy than she lets on.

Century Properties Managing Director Robbie Antonio said as much when he explained their choice of Paris Hilton as their business partner for a beach resort residential complex.

“I don’t believe in endorsements wherein they’re not part of the process. Paris is designing the beach club. She comes from a real estate heritage, her predisposition to style and design is unparalleled," he said.

Although she comes from a family known to be lord of real estate, this is one industry Paris had yet to immerse herself in. But given that she’ll be designing the beach club for the property, I’d say the party-loving and beach-going heiress might have found the perfect testing ground for her real estate prowess.

During the press conference, Paris’ lines sounded rehearsed, even robotic, but she always said the right things at the right time. This girl wasn’t playing an airhead—she was, in fact, a living, breathing business woman Barbie who meant business.

“An inspiration"

That’s not to say that Paris is a phony. One of the less rehearsed-looking moments on the press conference came when Paris’ “number one Filipino fan" was called on stage to finally meet her idol.

Isha Dinio was in tears while hugging Paris. The two had actually been friends on Twitter for over two years now, and it was Isha whom Paris tagged when she announced her trip to the Philippines.

“Hey @iamishagirl, I'm flying to Manila, Philippines on August 13th for a few days. Would love to meet up while I'm there. Love you. xo P," Paris tweeted. https://twitter.com/#!/ParisHilton

The 20-year-old Isha told GMA News Online that she’s been a fan of Paris since she was 10 years old, after watching her on “The Simple Life," a reality show that featured Paris Hilton and then-best friend Nicole Richie.

“Parang siya yung Barbie doll that I could never have," Isha said of Paris. Isha’s love for the heiress, she explained, wasn’t just because of her beauty or her stardom—Paris is really just a nice person, she explained.

When asked about Paris’ less than ideal debacles, Isha explained her coping mechanism as “pasok sa isang tenga, labas sa isa" (goes in one ear and out the other).

Paris is frequently at the receiving end of Hollywood gossip and scandal, but Isha shrugs them off. “I just collect and collect all the positive [things] and ignore all the negative," she added.

Isha was invited to a party that evening and again on Thursday, to Paris’ store launch at SM Megamall.

Paris visit 2.0?

It’s been a whirlwind of activity both for Paris Hilton and her posse and the Philippine media. Paris left Thursday night wearing one of the T-shirts the Pacquiaos gave her.

“Bye Manila, I will miss you! Sad to leave, everyone was so sweet! Love the #Philippines so much! I will be back soon! Love you all! xo P:)," she tweeted.

Model and TV personality Georgina Wilson had a point when she pointed out that the Philippine President had better, more important things to do than meet a Hollywood socialite and maybe that applies to every other Filipino too—did we really have to spend so much of our energies on the ineffable Miss Hilton?

Maybe we did, maybe we didn’t.

As luck would have it, Reuters came out with a survey on the most popular and most trusted celebrities in her home country the night Paris left the Philippines.

Not surprisingly, Paris was ranked the most unfavorable celebrity in America, besting meltdown-fresh Charlie Sheen. According to the article, companies ought to steer clear of Paris if they want what’s best for their brand.

Obviously, Century Properties and the Filipino people have yet to receive the memo.

And who knows when or if we’ll ever get that memo? Paris has already promised a return visit. “Loves it!" as Paris would say. - YA, GMA News

Manila according to Paris

MB:

Hollywood star Paris Hilton took to Twitter expressing her happiness with her Philippine stay.

“I love the food in the #Philippines! So delicious! Loves it :),” one of her posts read.

The hotel heiress also commended Filipino designers she has worked with. “Love my stylist here @Bea_Constantino. She is putting me in the most beautiful dresses. Loving all the Filipino designers, so talented!” she said.

“What a great crew on set today! I love everyone I’ve met in the #Philippines, such good people. :),” Paris tweeted after shooting a commercial for Century Properties for her new Paris Beach Club at The Azure on Aug. 15. She then added, “So proud of my newest business endeavour. So exciting!”

Paris also publicly announced her desire to meet with Manny Pacquiao and wife Jinkee again. The reality star previously met with the couple in Las Vegas last May.

She tweeted, “Looking forward to meeting up with my friends Manny and Jinkee Pacquiao while I’m here. They are such a cool sweet couple! Love them! :)”

Not meeting P-Noy

On Monday, Malacañang representatives dismissed President Noynoy Aquino’s rumored meeting with Paris.

In an interview with dzRB, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said of the possible meeting: “Sa amin pong pagkakaalam, wala po. Wala pong naibibigay na advice sa amin, however, we are coordinating with the President’s private office kung sakali pong mayroon talagang courtesy call.”

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda also told reporters on Monday, “The President is concerned with matters of the state.”

Lost phones

The American socialite discovered she lost two gadgets before arriving at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on the country night of Aug. 14. Reports claim however, that Paris might have lost her iPhones at her last stop before Manila, which was in Dubai.

In a report by MSN Philippines, Connie Bungag, chief of the Manila International Airport Authority’s media affairs division, said through a statement: “As she was walking the concourse area, she stopped and tried looking for it in her bag. We don’t think she lost it here. When she was deplaning, she was already looking for the phones.”

Meanwhile, Paris will be seeing her Pinoy fans today, Aug. 18 as she opens her fourth boutique in the country, the Paris Hilton Handbags and Accessories store at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City. A meet-and-greet session follows at 4 p.m.

Paris Hilton on the Philippines: 'I love it!'

GMANEWS:

Although more than an hour late for her Wednesday press conference at the Manila Peninsula, Paris Hilton was more than ready to talk about her career and newest business venture, a beach resort residence complex in the middle of Metro Manila.

She was also generous with her compliments—a few days ago, she tweeted about loving Filipino food and on Wednesday, praised the media, beaches and women of the Philippines. She “loves it," as her newest tag line goes.

The 30-year-old heiress, former reality star, socialite and business woman is in the Philippines for five days for a partnership with Century Properties.

Real estate legacy

Paris, who comes from the hotelier Hilton family, will be the official ambassador for the company. “Deciding to work with her was the logical choice as we found no other personality more suited to embody the upscale fashionable beachgoer," said Robbie Antonio, managing director of Century Properties.

Hilton added that even before sealing the deal with Century Properties, the beach lifestyle was always something that she enjoyed. “It’s something that I love to do… and I think something like that in the Philippines would just be wonderful," she said.

Hours before the press conference, the blonde stunner announced that she was at a meeting for the property beach club that she will be designing for Century.

Hilton’s frequent trips to different beaches around the world were also a reason why the company picked her to be a partner for the project.

“With her exposure to the best beaches around the world, coupled with her fun and sensible fashion sense, we believe that we’ve made the right choice," added Antonio.

Hilton said that a few days ago, her grandfather Barron Hilton had called to say that he was proud of her latest real estate venture. “Real estate is really our family’s thing," she said.

The heiress’ soft side

Hilton was in for a surprise during the press conference. Unbeknownst to her, Century had arranged for her "number one fan" in the Philippines, 20-year-old Isha Dinio, to be at the press conference too.

“Noong August 2, nagising na lang po ako. Bigla kasi nag-tweet siya sa akin [to say] that she was coming to the Philippines," Dinio told GMA News Online.

Dinio said she has been a fan of Hilton for ten years now, and that she has been an inspiration to her. The moment she stepped on stage to finally meet her idol, Dinio broke into tears.

“Naiyak po ako kasi she told me, ‘I’ve been wanting to see you since day one’," Dinio said. After hugging her fan on stage, the heiress gave Dinio a Paris Hilton bag.

On Thursday, Hilton’s last day in the country, she will be at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong to open her fourth store in the country.

Dinio said that she will also be there during the meet-and-greet session. Hilton had even sent a direct message to her on Twitter to ask for her mobile phone number, Dinio said.

After the press conference, Dinio and other Hilton fans posed for a photo with the celebrity. Hilton remarked, “All the Filipino women are so gorgeous. Everyone's so exotic and fabulous. I love it."

Party with the Pacquiaos

Since arriving Sunday evening, the heiress has been living anything but the simple life, shuttling from one business engagement to another. On Monday, Hilton joined a shoot for a beach club she is designing in collaboration with a local real estate development group.

Despite her numerous commitments in the Philippines, however, Hilton made time on Tuesday evening to attend a dinner party hosted by Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao and his wife Jinkee.

From Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning, the statuesque former reality star posted photos of her and the Pacquiaos on her Twitter account.

“Love this pic from tonight of me with Manny and Jinkee Pacquiao. What an amazing couple they are! Love them! :)" Hilton tweeted, accompanied with a photo on her official website.

After posting several photos of her and the Pacquiaos, “Paris Hilton" became a Twitter trending topic in the Philippines Wednesday morning.

Georgina Wilson clarifies her tweet about Paris Hilton "meeting up" with PNoy

PEP:

Nag-react sa balitang ito si Georgina at sinabi through a Twitter post na "why is PNOY taking time out of his 'busy' schedule to meet with Paris Hilton tomorrow. So shameful that he doesn't have better things to do."

Muli namang nag-tweet si Georgina at sinabing, "I dnt mean to offend anyone or be negative I jst think that Paris Hilton isnt important enough for a president to meet up with.night guys :)" (CLICK HERE to read related story.)

"I just really felt strongly about the issue so I felt that I had to say something.

"It's not that I'm pro- or anti-Paris, I'm also not pro o anti our president...

"You know, I have an opinion and I respect everybody's opinion—everybody that would say negative and positive things.

"There are a lot agreeing and a lot disagreeing, and I think they took it in a way that I'm insulting Paris or the president, But it really wasn't about that.

"It's about voicing out my opinion and it's just because I'm concerned.

"I respect everybody's opinion and I also hope that they respect mine and it's more of that I'm critical of what our country should and shouldn't do.

"It's not a personal thing.

"It has nothing to do with me not liking Paris or not. I mean, I'm happy that she loves the Philippines and I think she's very supportive with Manny Pacquiao and all of that.

"But I also don't think that it's necessary for the president to meet her because she's here on a commercial endeavor.

"If she's here for, you know, to help with humanitarian causes and all of that stuff, then sure, go meet with her. But that's just my opinion."

NOT AN IMPORTANT PERSON.

Paliwanag naman ni Georgina, "It's more like she was here brought by a company. If she was visiting like a state visit, then fine. And I'm sure a lot of people will disagree.

"Paris has lots of avid fans and I enjoy watching her shows too. I like her. But I just don't think that it's necessary for him to meet with her.

"I mean I would've liked to see that with Bruno Mars because he's Filipino and he brings a lot of fame to the country and he makes us very proud.

"But, you know, it's just my opinion. I could be right, could be wrong."

"You know, the thing is that's taking it out of the context. It's not that I don't like her.

"I mean, if I were invited to her events then I definitely would go," sabi pa niya nang tanungin kung dadalo ba siya sa private party ni Paris na ginaganap din ngayong gabi sa naturang hotel.

"Of course. Oh, for sure I would like to meet her.

"We have the same shoe size," nakangiti niyang sabi, patunay lang na para sa kanya walang personalan ang nangyari sa Twitter.

"I think what we can take from this is it's important for my generation to have an opinion, to voice out your opinion.

"And what is Twitter for if not for voicing out your opinion?"

LESSON LEARNED. Ano naman ang natutunan niya out of her experience na nagkaroon siya ng ilang bashers sa social networks?

"If anything, it made me more sure that I should voice opinions when I feel it's necessary and that people on Twitter should let people voice opinions.

"I want my generation to be critical of the government, of social issues. I want people to care.

"And if they don't use Twitter as a platform to voice their opinions then what is Twitter for?" saad niya.

"I'm happy if they have a reaction—an opinion—whether it be positive or negative.

"But if it's negative, then, I shared my opinion and I hope they're okay with that," sagot ni Georgina.

PEP:

Pacquiao to have dinner with Paris Hilton in Manila

GMA NEWS:

World boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao will have dinner with celebrity hotel heiress Paris Hilton on Tuesday.

“Pag-uusapan siguro namin yung business," Pacquiao, 32, told reporters at the House of Representatives.

His wife, Jinky, and close friend Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit" Singson will also be present during the dinner, he added.

Pacquiao first met Hilton at a post-fight party in Las Vegas last May after his victory over American fighter Shane Mosley. Hilton also met Jinkee at the same event.

It was during this party that Hilton first informed the media that she will be visiting the Philippines soon.

The boxing champ refused to disclose the dinner venue, but hinted at some topics he would discuss with the celebrity.

“I-encourage ko rin siya para makatulong sa mga mahihirap. Kung anong mapag-usapan namin, babalita ko sa inyo," he said.

Georgina Wilson receives negative comments for bashing Paris Hilton's rumored courtesy call to PNoy

PEP:

Sa kanyang personal Twitter account ay ito ang ipinahayag ni Georgina: "why is PNOY taking time out of his "busy" schedule to meet with Paris Hilton tomorrow. So shameful that he doesn't have better things to do."

"Don't be such a hater, Georgina Wilson! Paris Hilton is waaaaaay better than youuuu," tweet ng isang user na nagngangalang Charlene Dacara.

Sinabi naman ng Twitter user na si Madox Llaguno, "The only reason why Georgina Wilson has strong opinions re Paris is because she doesn't have the opportunity to meet her."

Sa halip, ipinaliwanag pa niya ilang oras ang makalipas na, "I dnt mean to offend anyone or be negative I jst think that Paris Hilton isnt important enough for a president to meet up with.night guys :)"

:) glad my tweet yesterday evoked such strong feelings, both positive and negative. means we have opinions and we care :)"

"However, we are coordinating with the President's private office kung sakali pong mayroon talagang courtesy call," sabi ni Valte sa dzRB.
