Shamcey Supsup reveals how she learned her trademark "tsunami walk"

THE TSUNAMI WALK. Kung si Venus Raj ay naalala sa kanyang "major, major" answer sa Miss Universe last year, si Shamcey naman ay nakikilala ngayon sa trademark niyang "tsunami walk."

What can she say about that?

"Grabe!" tawa niya.

"Nagulat talaga ako na may ganun pala.

"Kasi alam mo, when I was in Colombia, I stayed there for training, a fitting for the gown, the national costume.

"May isang... I don't know kung Brazilian siya or Venezuelan. He goes to our place, kasi may catwalk training ako with him.

"Kasi dun sa Colombia, dun sa bahay na tinirhan ko, they all speak Spanish, so I have to learn a few Spanish words.

"And siya, he doesn't know how to speak English.

"Sabi niya, 'We have to walk in runwell...' Runwell ang tawag niya sa runway, e.

"Ang alam niya lang word sa English ay 'fears' and then 'tsunami.'

"Sabi niya sa akin 'You know que tsunami, que...' gumaganun siya sa 'kin.

"Tapos, pinakita niya sa kin yung walk na, kailangan daw, nung ini-explain niya, kailangan daw parang lalaruin mo daw yung mga kalaban mo.

"Kasi, para daw tsunami, parang malakas na wave.

"And yun, yun yung sinabi ko during the interview, and I didn't know that it became the term for my walk.

"Parang yun din tuloy yung laging sumasagi sa isip ko na 'tsunami, tsunami!'

"Kaya kahit naglalakad na ako sa Miss Universe, yung tsunami walk na yun yung natatandaan ko."

Philippines to host Miss Universe 2013 !?

Panama has declined to stage the 2013 Miss Universe contest, two months after it was announced that the project is almost a done-deal between the government and the pageant organizers.

Reports also said the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) and ABS-CBN, new home of the BPCI, may soon bid for the staging of the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant in the Philippines.

If the Philippines wins the bid, it would be the third time for the Miss Universe pageant to be held in the country. It was first held in the country in 1974 when Miss Spain Amparo Munoz won the title. This was followed in 1994 when Miss India Sushmita Sen was crowned.

2011 Miss Universe 3rd runner up Shamcey Supsup earlier said she would love the Miss Universe pageant to be staged in the country “to show to the world what the Philippines can offer.’’

Panama said the $12 million budget for the holding of the beauty pageant would be too much, adding that they could not afford to stage the contest at this point, according to the website Global Beauties as reported in the Panama newspaper Mi Diario.

Salo Shamah, head of Panama’s Tourism Administration, confirmed that the Miss Universe Organization and the national government had met on several occasions to discuss the project.

But last week, Panama President Ricardo Martinelli decided that they could not afford the staging of the beauty pageant.

“We don’t even have $12 million for our annual advertising project,’’ Shamah said. “Even if private companies were able to fund half the money that is needed, it is still a big hit to our government budget.’’

Authorities also said that the few minutes of telecast of the country’s top destinations are not worth it because most of the viewers are from Asia “who have no direct flights to our country.’’

Panama recently made a good standing in the 2011 Miss Universe beauty pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil when its contestant Sheldry Saez placed among the Top 10 semifinalists and won the Best National Costume award. Panama staged the Miss Universe beauty pageant twice – in 1986 and 2003.

Why Lea Salonga chose Miss Angola over Shamcey

As is our wont after a competition, whether political or beauty-related, we cry “Harang!” especially when our bet doesn’t win or ends up a runner-up or an also-ran. Admit it, we are a nation of gripers.

Case in point: The recent Miss Universe Pageant held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where our bet, Shamcey Supsup, finished third runner-up (fourth placer) to Miss Angola Leila Lopes (a hands-down winner), before Miss China (fifth) and after Miss Ukraine (second) and Miss Brazil (third).

I understand why some of us protested (suspecting “hometown decision”) that Shamcey, instead of Miss Brazil, should have placed third, basing our decision on the answers of the Top 5 in the final judging. Yes, I would say that Shamcey gave the best answer (about not changing her religious beliefs to marry the man she loves because her first love is God) and she was the only one who didn’t need an interpreter.

One sore-loser Binibini even hinted in a TV interview that “politics “ comes into play in the pageant and that during her time there was prejudice against the Asian bets so no Asian made it to the finals. The sad truth is that she ended up a “thank you, girl” simply because she didn’t measure up to the pageant’s criteria. Quiet ka na lang ha, iha!

In a text interview with Funfare Update, Lea Salonga, the fifth Filipino to sit as Miss U judge, said, “I picked Miss Angola to win. I’m not sure what the other judges did. As for why Shamcey didn’t win, it isn’t anything she did wrong. It’s just that taking overall impact into consideration, from where we were sitting, Leila Lopes was just above and beyond everyone else.”

It was Lea who asked Miss Angola the crucial question: If you could change one of your physical characteristics, what would it be and why?

Miss Angola answered in Portuguese, aided by an interpreter who kept interrupting her, making Miss Angola break into a sweet, winsome smile instead of frowning: “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”

Some quarters criticized Lea for that kind of question but Lea and the other judges for that matter really had no choice. The questions were prepared by the Miss Universe organizers.

Added Lea, “If we weren’t unanimous in picking the winner, we almost were. Many of us were in agreement that Miss Angola should win. It’s how we each ranked the runners-up that differed. I ranked Shamcey 2nd. But another judge may have ranked her 4th or 5th. I was happy though with how Shamcey did. That 4th place out of 89. Pretty darn good, I thought.”

Warm welcome for Miss Universe 3rd Princess Shamcey Supsup

A ticker-tape parade organized by the local government of Makati City welcomes 2011 Miss Universe 3rd Runner-Up Shamcey Supsup at 4 p.m. Monday

Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay invites everyone to join the parade along Ayala Avenue.

According to Binay, the city’s tribute to Supsup Monday will include a visit at around 3:30 p.m. to her high school Alma Mater, Makati High School, where she graduated salutatorian in 2003.

From there, she will proceed to the Makati Central Fire Station at the corner of Ayala Avenue and Malugay Street, the staging area for the parade that will traverse the entire stretch of Ayala Avenue up to EDSA, he said.

“We urge everyone, including our residents and the business community, to join the parade and give a rousing welcome to Miss Shamcey Supsup who has made us truly proud. It is our own way of expressing our admiration and gratitude for the great honor she has brought to Makati, to our country, and to all Filipinos,” Binay said.

Supsup was a sophomore transferee at the Makati High School where she shone not only academically but also in extra-curricular activities.

She was an active member of the school’s Supreme Student Council.

She was also sent to Japan as an exchange scholar student for the School Year 2001-2002, and had been the school representative in various leadership seminars.

“With her scholastic achievements and impressive performance at the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant, Miss Shamcey Supsup has become a role model to the youth. I am sure she has inspired countless young students, especially Makati public students, to strive for excellence and pursue their dreams with passion and determination,” Binay said.

Showing signs of being destined to become a beauty queen early on, Supsup won in beauty competitions during high school, such as the Lakambini ng Aklatan, and was a favorite choice as muse in their school’s intramurals, and proms, among others.

Supsup was born on May 16, 1986 in General Santos.

She is a licensed architect and topped the Architecture Licensure Examination in July 2010 after graduating Magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Supsup, 25, arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from Los Angeles, California, USA, at 6 a.m. Sunday. In the afternoon, she met members of the media, during a press briefing at the Gateway Suites, Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City.

Miss Universe Scandal: Could Miss Angola Lose the Crown?

Controversy hounds the 2011 Miss Universe pageant after reports claimed the winner, Miss Angola, used false documents to join the contest.

A news article in the Daily Mail, a newspaper in London, dated Sept. 16, 2011, reported that the newly crowned Miss Universe Leila Lopes had used fake documents to get into the pageant.

The Daily Mail said a man identified as Charles Mukano allegedly helped Lopes to join the Miss Angola UK, a beauty contest for Angolan women staying in London, “despite her living in Angola.’’

An Argentine news source reported that Mukano organized the beauty contest that Lopes won. The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) told the AOL Latino that they do not know Mukano. It said the organizer of the Miss Angola pageant is Renato Guttler.

But another report claimed that Mukano allegedly obtained false documents to prove that Lopes is a business student in Britain. The MUO has denied the allegations.

Lopes, 25, is the first Miss Universe from Angola.

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup was 3rd runner-up.

Missosology, a website on the beauty pageant, posted that in an interview by the French magazine Premiere, 2011 Miss France Laury Thilleman said she doubted Lopes’ victory in the Miss Universe pageant that was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last Sept. 12.

“She’s the only girl that I did not know too well. We did not see her much, she was very discreet. She was often in jeans and no makeup. We were all surprised by her victory. Many girls have made efforts that have not been rewarded. I do not know, there’s something missing in her temperament. The fact that the contest was held in Brazil has certainly played a role,” said Thilleman, who made the pageant’s Top 10.

The other finalists were Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko, first runner-up; Miss Brazil Priscilla Machado, 2nd runner-up; and Miss China Luo Zilin.

Supsup is expected to arrive Sunday morning, following a brief stay in Los Angeles, California.

A grand welcome has been prepared for her.

Apart from the ticker tape parade prepared by the Makati City government, Supsup, 25, is also expected to pay a courtesy call on President Aquino in Malacañang.

The TSUNAMI CATWALK of Shamcey Supsup gains prominence

Aside from her third runner-up finish in the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant, Shamcey Supsup also made famous a catwalk style—the ‘tsunami catwalk.’

“Takaw atensyon ang pagrampa ni Ms. Universe third runner-up Shamcey Supsup. Kakaiba kasi ang hampas ng kanyang balakang sa kanyang paglakad. Parang alon daw na humahampas kaya’t binansagang tsunami catwalk,” said a report on “24 Oras,” Sept. 14.

Missosology, an organization in the country that analyzes beauty pageants, revealed that it was Shamcey’s trainer who coined the new catwalk term.

“Nagsi-sway kasi ‘yung hips niya. ‘Yung Columbian traineer niya na hindi masyadong makapag-express in English sinabing, ‘O, Ms. Philippines you walk like a tsunami,’” Yel Santos, a "missosologist," revealed in the episode.

For Abbygale Arenas de Leon, Bb. Pilipinas Universe and personality development instructor, what Shamcey displayed was a unique catwalk skill.

“Medyo talent ‘yon, ha. Nade-detach mo ‘yung hips mo sa katawan mo. Kasi usually ‘pag normal na tao kumembot sumasama ang buong katawan. Pero siya hindi, pansinin mo ang lakad niya hips lang ang gumagalaw. Ang galing. Ang ganda,” Abbygale explained.

With the tsunami style of modeling, Shamcey was able to give a new meaning to personality.

“She [gave] personality not just to herself but also to the outfit that she was wearing. So, nabuhay niya ‘yung damit. Nag-add up ‘yung beauty, ‘yung beauty ng damit, ‘yung flow ng damit, ‘yung galaw, nag-add up lahat, eh. Sa totoo lang, noong mismong pageant, paganda siya nang paganda nang paganda nang paganda. Akala ko talaga siya ang mananalo. Nakakaasar,” the former beauty queen shared.

To show the difference between catwalk ramp then and now, Abbygale walked the ramp like they did before.

“Noong panahon daw niya, ‘the glide’ ang eleganteng konsepto ng paglalakad o tipong hindi halos gumagalaw ang katawan na para bang dumudulas lang sa entablado ang beauty queen,” the report said.

But more than her unique catwalk skills, Shamcey stood out because of her smart answer to the question thrown at her.

“Takaw atensyon ang pagrampa ni Ms. Universe third runner-up Shamcey Supsup. Kakaiba kasi ang hampas ng kanyang balakang sa kanyang paglakad. Parang alon daw na humahampas kaya’t binansagang tsunami catwalk,” said a report on “24 Oras,” Sept. 14.

Missosology, an organization in the country that analyzes beauty pageants, revealed that it was Shamcey’s trainer who coined the new catwalk term.

“Nagsi-sway kasi ‘yung hips niya. ‘Yung Columbian traineer niya na hindi masyadong makapag-express in English sinabing, ‘O, Ms. Philippines you walk like a tsunami,’” Yel Santos, a "missosologist," revealed in the episode.

For Abbygale Arenas de Leon, Bb. Pilipinas Universe and personality development instructor, what Shamcey displayed was a unique catwalk skill.

“Medyo talent ‘yon, ha. Nade-detach mo ‘yung hips mo sa katawan mo. Kasi usually ‘pag normal na tao kumembot sumasama ang buong katawan. Pero siya hindi, pansinin mo ang lakad niya hips lang ang gumagalaw. Ang galing. Ang ganda,” Abbygale explained.

With the tsunami style of modeling, Shamcey was able to give a new meaning to personality.

“She [gave] personality not just to herself but also to the outfit that she was wearing. So, nabuhay niya ‘yung damit. Nag-add up ‘yung beauty, ‘yung beauty ng damit, ‘yung flow ng damit, ‘yung galaw, nag-add up lahat, eh. Sa totoo lang, noong mismong pageant, paganda siya nang paganda nang paganda nang paganda. Akala ko talaga siya ang mananalo. Nakakaasar,” the former beauty queen shared.

To show the difference between catwalk ramp then and now, Abbygale walked the ramp like they did before.

“Noong panahon daw niya, ‘the glide’ ang eleganteng konsepto ng paglalakad o tipong hindi halos gumagalaw ang katawan na para bang dumudulas lang sa entablado ang beauty queen,” the report said.

But more than her unique catwalk skills, Shamcey stood out because of her smart answer to the question thrown at her.

Miss Universe 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup is already taken

Although she admits being in a relationship, Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup declined to divulge the name of her boyfriend in order to protect his privacy.

“Baka di na siya makalabas ng bahay!” the 25-year-old GenSan beauty exclaimed in a live phone interview on “Umagang Kay Ganda (UKG),” Sept. 14.

She had already divulged on “Bandila” on Sept. 13 that she’s in a romantic relationship, saying, “Hindi ako showbiz eh. I want to be honest. I want people to know about it.”

She did reveal to “UKG" that her beau was Catholic before becoming Born Again Christian.

Her latest revelation may well reflect in Shamcey’s much talked-about response to the question that judge Vivica Fox posed to her in the Q&A portion of the Miss Universe pageant—that is, if she would change her religion to marry the person she loves.

The Architecture board top-notcher said that she won’t change her religion for the man she loves “because the first person that I love is God…

“And if that person loves me, he should love my God too.”

In her “Bandila” interview, the magna cum laude graduate from the University of the Philippines-Diliman explained,“My mom (Marcelina Supsup) is really strict and she always told me na ‘yung magiging boyfriend ko or ‘yung asawa ko should be a Christian first, and that our relationship should be centered [on] God.

“Kumbaga, walang kinalaman sa pageant or sa question and answer. It was just what she taught me and it just came out naturally.”

In spite of her celebrated achievement in the pageant, which was held Sept. 13 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, many reportedly deemed that it was Shamcey—and not Miss Angola Leila Lopes—who should have won; or that the former should have placed higher in the competition, at least.

To this, Shamcey said, “Well una masaya dahil they consider me as the Miss Universe pero para sa’kin, we’re not the judges there, and I accept the fact na I’m third runner-up and I’m already happy. I think we should be happy also for Miss Angola that she won, and I think that she also deserves the crown.”

Highlights of the Miss Universe 2011 Pageant

The most beautiful day on earth has come to an end, but definitely not with remorse.

The world is celebrating the first victory of Angola as its 25-year-old representative Leila Lopes bagged the coveted Miss Universe crown at the pageant's 60th staging on September 12 (September 13 in the Philippines) at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Featuring 87 beautiful ladies from all over the world, the competition brought cheers and tears to fans who were tuned in to the live telecast, including Filipinos rooting for Miss Philippines candidate Shamcey Supsup.

It's easy to say that the country took a halt as supporters braced themselves for the results.

The show opened with all the ladies taking the stage one by one and greeting the audience.

NBC'S Today host Natalie Morales and Bravo TV'S Andy Cohen from Watch What Happens: Live hosted the program, while Brazilian music sensations Claudia Leitte and Bebel Gilberto performed live.

In between segments, the candidates' adventures around Sao Paulo were shown via a montage of photos and videos taken during their month-long stay in the city.

Soon, 87 was cut down to 16 and the lucky girls called out were Miss France Laury Thilleman, Miss Kosovo Aferdita Dreshaj, Miss Colombia Catalina Robayo, Miss China Luo Zilin, Miss Angola Leila Lopes, Miss Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs, Miss Puerto Rico Viviana Ortiz (who was celebrating her birthday), Miss Brazil Priscila Machado, Miss Netherlands Kelly Weekers, Miss USA Alyssa Campanella, Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko, Miss Panama Sheldry Saez, Miss Costa Rica Johanna Solano, Miss Portugal Laura Goncalves (who was included in the list after she won the official online poll at the Miss Universe website), Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup and Miss Venezuela Vanessa Goncalves.

The candidates modeled their swimwear by Catalina Brasil and were judged by viewers live through the NBC website and the panel of judges, which included Filipino Broadway star Lea Salonga, actress Vivica A. Fox and Miss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega.

The list was cut shorter to ten, leaving Australia, Costa Rica, France, Ukraine, Portugal, Panama, Philippines, Angola, China and Brazil in competition.

Next came the evening gown competition and announcement of the Top 5 candidates—Mss. Ukraine, Philippines, China, Brazil and Angola.

Miss Universe Highlights: Shamcey Supsup - I made a big mistake

Una munang tinanong kay Shamcey kung ano ang pakiramdam niya na nakasama siya sa Top 5 at naging 3rd runner-up.

"I'm just so happy, I just wanna people would be proud of me. Sabi ko, I don't want to let them down," sagot ng 25-year-old beauty queen.

"Sabi ko, it's okay kung hindi ako matawag sa Top 16. Kasi sabi ko, lahat naman kami magaganda.

Saang part siya ng competition pinaka-nahirapan?

"During that time, the heart beating so fast."

"Well, life is unpredictable," sambit niya.
