FBI to contact actor Jude Law to gather evidence of News Corp phone hacking in the United States.

Courtesy of the BBC News:

The FBI plans to contact the actor Jude Law following claims that his mobile phone was hacked during a visit to the US, officials have told the BBC.

It is alleged that a 2003 story by the News of the World newspaper was based on information from Law's voicemail.

If the accusation were true, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation could face charges in the US.

An article in the News of the World published on published on 7 September 2003 gave a detailed account of the actor's communications with his assistant.

Law's phone would have been using an American mobile network if used in the US, which could open the door to charges under US federal law, says the BBC's Steve Kingstone in New York.

Every time I see a story about the investigation moving to US soil it just makes me that much more convinced that the noose is tightening around the flabby neck of Fox News.  And it never fails to put a HUGE smile on my face at the thought.

And by the way the irony that the most damaging evidence against News Corp might come from the British actors that they harassed the most, like Hugh Grant and Jude Law, is not lost on me either.

SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 - Teaser Trailer and Posters

Official Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room…until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large—Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris)—and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder—a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle, designed by one Professor Moriarty.

Mixing business with pleasure, Holmes tracks the clues to an underground gentlemen’s club, where he and his brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) are toasting Dr. Watson on his last night of bachelorhood. It is there that Holmes encounters Sim (Noomi Rapace), a Gypsy fortune teller, who sees more than she is telling and whose unwitting involvement in the prince’s murder makes her the killer’s next target. Holmes barely manages to save her life and, in return, she reluctantly agrees to help him.

The investigation becomes ever more dangerous as it leads Holmes, Watson and Sim across the continent, from England to France to Germany and finally to Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead as he spins a web of death and destruction—all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history.

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Jared Harris, Noomi Rapace

Director: Guy Ritchie ("Snatch", "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels")

Screenplay: Kieran Mulroney, Michele Mulroney

ANNA KARENINA Cast Update

Jude Law
Director Joe Wright is no stranger to literary adaptations. "Pride & Prejudice" and "Atonement" look great on his resume, although, to be honest, his version of the Jane Austen novel doesn't even come close to the 1995 BBC mini-series starring Colin Firth. Then again it's kind of hard to defeat 6 hours of faithful narrative. Now, Wright has taken on the task of adapting Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina". Not an easy task at all, as the movie has had countless big screen and TV adaptations, two of the more recent being the 2000 TV mini-series starring Helen McCrory and Kevin McKidd and the 1997 movie starring Sophie Marceau, Sean Bean and Alfred Molina.

Keira Knightley
So far the movie has  barely even finished the casting process, with all the key roles accounted for. Wright's favorite actress, Keira Knightley (worked together on both of his previously mentioned movies), has signed on to play Anna, while her "Pride and Prejudice" co-star Matthew Macfayden will play her brother, Prince Stepan Oblonsky. Jude Law is set to play Alexei Karenin, Anna's husband, and Aaron Johnson ("Kick-Ass") got the part of Count Vronsky, Anna's lover. Other unknown roles have been assigned to Saoirse Ronan, Olivia Williams (both have worked with Wright on "Hanna"), Kelly MacDonald ("Boardwalk Empire", "Trainspotting"), Andrea Riseborough ("Happy-Go-Lucky", "Made in Dagenham") and Domhnall Gleeson ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", "True Grit").

Wright clearly has a talented cast on his hands, though I'm still on the fence about Knightley. Knowing the director's previous works, it should be a lavish production filled with excellent art direction, a lush score and beautiful cinematography. Remains to be seen just how faithful he can stay to the source material with the limited running time and pacing issues that a cinematic project involves (the novel is about 800 pages long). Filming begins this fall, in Russia and the UK.
