Filipino-Irish “Glee” star Darren Criss referred to himself as a “fake Potter” longing to meet the real Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe.
In a feature story on MTV.com, the American media caught up with Darren at the recent Comic-Con event where he was made to comment about replacing Daniel in the hit Broadway production “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
“The fake Harry Potter has not met the real Harry Potter, only in my dreams, and that’s probably as close as I’ll ever get,” Darren humbly remarked to MTV News.
Both actors have been the subject of parallel Hollywood plots as Darren first rose to mainstream attention following his Harry Potter stage gig via “A Very Potter Musical” prior to Warblers fame.
After having been promoted to “Glee” regular in the forthcoming season three, TV’s Blaine snatched a three-week stint starting Jan. 3, 2012 right after the “Harry Potter” star departs “How to Succeed…” at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
“Right now, honestly, I’m just trying to get my head screwed back on. I’ve been traveling around a lot, and who knows what the future holds? But if that’s something, who knows, that’d be great,” the Hollywood heartthrob told MTV News.
The stage break will clash with the actor’s “Glee” taping schedule but creators of the hit TV serial expressed support for Darren to do the play.
Eonline.com’s Ted Casablanca wrote an extended piece about the potential of the Fil-Irish talent who visited Manila for shows months back.
Calling Darren and Daniel’s Hollywood race “twin careers,” the feature outlined ways for Darren to capitalize in order “to further separate himself from the pack” of budding young stars.
The analysis suggested for Darren to look out for a good breakout film project. “Darren’s already proved himself to be a capable songwriter and producer. So why not aim for a feature film? If Ben Affleck and Matt Damon can win an Oscar for Best Screenplay, there’s no doubt that Darren can. It should be a comedy, maybe one throwing in his singing chops.”
The story also proposed a villain role for Darren. “Get his Voldemort on! While Daniel shone as hero Harry Potter, we have doubts about his ability to be a convincing bad guy. But we can totally see Darren rocking a villain role, but not one of those creepy, lurk-in-the-shadows kind of guys. We’re thinking maybe a devilishly charming young man with a hidden dark side, something along the lines of ‘American Psycho.’ And a maniacal laugh is an absolute must.”
While Daniel opted for going full frontal for “Equus,” Eonline thinks otherwise for Darren. “Fans swooned when those wet, shirtless pics of Darren emerged earlier this year. But we have to admit, we’re slightly relieved Darren hasn’t dropped trou yet. No offense, Danny, but deciding to go full-frontal for ‘Equus’ may not have been your most fab hour, gutsy as it was.”
