Friday adventures

We typically stay home and nerd out on Friday evenings, but tonight we have especially fun plans! Toby and I are going to the newly restored carousel in Brooklyn. It has 1,200 twinkling lights, which I know is going to blow his baby mind. (And I'll be getting snacks here.) Then Alex and I are joining friends for a sunset sail. I'm excited to feel the wind in our hair and see the city from the water. New York, you really nail it sometimes.

Also, the Cup of Jo Guide to NYC is officially slated for the week of September 26th! Can't wait to share.

Bravo, Toby!

Yesterday was an exciting day in the Goddard-Williams household. After months of clutching the coffee table and wobbling around on tippy toe, Toby STOOD all by himself for the very first time!!! Look at the balance! The posture! The nonchalance! Huge congratulations, my little one, from your very proud mama.

(You've come a long way, baby.)

Do or don't: Surprise parties

My darlings, I have a question: Have you ever had (or thrown) a surprise party? My mom's 60th birthday is next year, and I'm trying to figure out whether we should throw a surprise party or tell her the fun plans ahead of time. Personally, I wonder if surprises are overrated; I like having months of giddy anticipation before an event, and I think walking into an unexpected party might feel surreal. But am I nuts? Would it be totally amazing? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!
P.S. My mom is on vacation right now so she won't read this post! :)

New Zealand in the 1960s

My grandparents lived in England almost all their lives, but in 1955 they moved around the world to New Zealand for six years. At the time, they had three little kids--my dad, the oldest, was just four years old. "We wanted to get out of post-war Europe," my dad remembers. "New Zealand was full of sunshine and light."
My aunt found some old family photographs (on slides) recently, and they're amazing for us to look through. "It was fantastic, just fabulous," remembers my dad. "Sailing, surfing, beaches, mountains, the most glorious place for outside living."
My grandfather got a job at the University of Christchurch, and the family lived in a little bungalow. We looked up their address on Google maps!  9 Champion St, Christchurch, New Zealand. So cool to see the actual street.
I asked my dad when he remembered about their time there, and he said, "We ate a lot of lamb. We'd buy half a sheep a week, which cost one pound. We'd get a shoulder, a leg, lamb chops, kidneys. The next Saturday, we'd get another half sheep! A half sheep would do it."
"We also had a pet lamb in the backyard," he said, "A family friend of ours was named Angus Lamb (a real person), so when we got an actual lamb, of course we called him Angus!"
During their six years in New Zealand, my grandmother had a fourth baby there--my aunt Lulu.
My dad, who was five in these christening photos, is wearing his red school uniform. "One thing (that still happens in old-fashioned families) is that English boys wear their school uniform when they want to look 'smart,' " said my aunt.
Here, they were on vacation at The Hermitage Hotel, which had just been built. "It was state of the art," said my dad, "Glorious big windows, modern, exciting. We usually camped, so this was quite a treat." My aunt Jackie, who is the little girl in this photo, remembers: "I remember swearing and my dad made me apologize to the manager. We skated on the wood floors in our socks, and saw snow for the first time. I was not allowed up the glacier, which really riled me; I was too small."
I think my dad looks just like Toby here!
New Zealand looks incredible! What an adventure! xoxo

Beachy day

Toby and I are playing hooky for the rest of the week and heading to Fire Island with these guys. We're excited to nap on the beach and maybe grill some burgers. I have more posts coming up, if you're in a blog reading mood. :) xoxo P.S. Have you ever been to Fire Island?

Do you ever worry that you won't meet your soulmate?

Remember that episode of Seinfeld when Jerry says that only 5 percent of the population is date-able? Elaine asks, "Then how are the other 95 percent getting together?" Jerry's response? "Alcohol."

When I was single, I felt the same way. I was meeting lots of people--but no one I really wanted to date. And the guys I did like already had girlfriends (or just weren't interested, sad). My mom kept telling me that I would definitely end up with someone fabulous and that I shouldn't worry so much. She said she was 100% sure and that it was normal to worry but that I didn't need to. But it was easy for her to say--she was already blissfully married! And I was 28 (which felt old to me at the time). Plus, New York seemed like the roughest place to date: You're always surrounded by models (honest-to-goodness perfect-skinned, long-legged, 6-foot-tall Ukrainian models), and the guys you meet seem to either be married or a little nuts.

Once I met Alex, I realized that I was silly to have worried so much. We're all such smart, funny and wonderful people, and so many people would be lucky to have us. Why does it often take a relationship to realize that? Plus, as my mom says, "It only takes one person to have met the love of your life!" A while ago, I heard another great quote: "If you knew you were going to meet the love of your life in one year, how different would that year be?" That awesome quote reveals how much we sometimes worry about our dating lives when we could be relaxing and enjoying other parts of our lives.

What's your relationship status? What are your dating woes? Do you ever worry that you're never going to find your soulmate? Do you think your city plays into it? If you're in a relationship, how do you feel now? I would love to hear... xoxo

Motherhood Mondays: Alex's side of the birth story

Now that it's been more than a year since Toby's birth, and our second wedding anniversary is around the corner, I thought I'd finally ask Alex to share his side of our birth story. I'm always really curious about what it's like for dads, whether they're coaching breathing, getting their hands tightly squeezed or pacing the waiting room. So, below, Alex shares his thoughts... :)

Have a relaxing weekend.

My lovelies, what are you up to this weekend? Alex and my second wedding anniversary is coming up, so I'm excited to announce that next week's posts will be all about relationships--first dates, breakups, proposals, weddings and all things smoochy. (Just thought it might be fun!) Meanwhile, have a great weekend, and here are a few great posts from around the web...

LOVE this quote.

Beautiful (not-too-expensive) boots for the fall.

Jenna Lyons is a genius.

These family panoramas are amazing! (Look closely!)

A shirt that a French girl would wear.

Star gazing.

Send this link to your crush.

Fascinating article about quitting your job to follow your dreams (written by Alex, yay:)

Yes, you can probably find a piece of pizza in NYC.

The 10 hilarious laws of parenting.

Cute yellow sweater for fall.

How much do you look like your relatives?

Have a good one! xo

(My favorite photo of Toby and me at the beach earlier this summer; sunhat from Amazon for the sweet readers who asked; it was a present from Alex for our honeymoon!)

Motherhood Mondays: A baby's 10 favorite things

Babies fall in love with the most random things. After reading this great post, I decided to photograph Toby's top ten toys. First up: A wooden car.
House keys. (We bought him a pair of toy keys, but he will not be fooled.)
A NYC counting book with pizza and taxis. (Note the chewed-on edges.)
My lemon squeezer.
A MetroCard! Bendy!
Rubber duckies: one friendly, one elegant.
Remotes. Oh, remotes.
Pens.
Old glasses.
Seriously, what is it about Elmo? He is like a rock star in the baby world.

Mamas, what random things does your baby love?

P.S. Another Motherhood Monday post coming up. xo

Pinhole Press vacation book

My darlings, we love taking vacation photos (who doesn't?) but then we never really look at them again. They're just stuck on our computers. So! We decided to make a Pinhole Press photo book with our England vacation snapshots, and I love love love the way it turned out. The paper is really soft, the photos look gorgeous, and it's amazing to have a little book of our vacation. Alex and I have read through it like fifty times. :) Here are a few of the pages...
Anyway, it was easy to make and it's so wonderful to have; now I'm dying to make litte photo books for all our vacations and events, including every Christmas break and our wedding and honeymoon. Thought I'd share! xoxo
P.S. Inspired, I also made some thank-you notes to have on hand at home, using a photo Amy Merrick emailed me of her flowers. :)

A new bike

My old bike got stolen a few weeks ago (even though it had the baby seat on it, harrumph!). It was a rusty Schwinn that I'd had for five years, and I figured it was now finally time to get a grown-up bike.

After researching online, I decided to get one of the PUBLIC bikes, which are incredible Dutch-inspired city bikes made in San Francisco. The best part is, they mail the bike right to your door, and you just have to put the final pieces together (they send you tools and easy instructions). I'm thrilled with the bike, which is cute, comfy and smooth to ride.

The models, above, look gorgeous, and here's me, below, during a recent date night with Alex. (We rode to Brooklyn for dinner.)
Riding in Manhattan...
Over the Brooklyn Bridge...
Fast...
But not as fast as Alex.

Do you have a bike? Which kind? I'd recommend a PUBLIC bike if you are in the market! They also have great bike gear. UPDATE! PUBLIC says they're happy to offer a 10% discount to Cup of Jo readers with the code CUPOFJO. Good until the end of August.

Coldy cold.

This summer has been recordbreakingly hot, but somehow I managed to come down with a terrible cold. I've been sick for a week, coughing, sneezing and waking up at night with a sore throat. I also lost my voice! The bright side? My friend sent me her recipe for a Hot Toddy, and Alex mixed one up last night. It was delicious. Have you ever had one?

Hot Toddy
½ shot Bourbon
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 cup hot water

What makes you feel better when you have a cold?

(Update: For readers who asked, my dress is Steven Alan, and my watch is a cheap Timex:)

Motherhood Mondays: On boobs. :)

My darlings, this may be a little intimate, but let's talk about breasts! After the jump, of course...
