Facebook Meme: Comparison between PH Azkal and PH Dragonboat

PEP:

PH Azkals: 0 Golds, 0 trophies, 5 TV ads, 20% Pinoy
PH Dragonboat team (2011) : 5 Golds, 0 commercials, 90% Pinoy
PH Azkals: with sponsors
...Ph Dragon boat team: inutang at KKB pamasahe.
Ph Azkals: complete outfit

"It's unfortunate there are people still thinking about these things instead of supporting each sport or the Filipino athlete, as a whole.

"To be honest about it, I'm quite disappointed with the way these people think.

"First of all, there's no such thing as 20 percent Filipino, or 80 percent... We are all Filipinos.

"At tayo man, saan man tayo makarating, o anuman ang sport na nire-represent natin, we carry our flag.

"We should carry it with pride and not carry it at the expense of other sports," diin ni Palami.

"On the second note, yung nakikita ko rin sa Facebook... parang nagrereklamo sila sa suporta na binibigay siguro, o kino-compare, and actually saying na we should be fair and susuportahan din dapat natin yung dragon boat.

"Ako, if we have a chance, why not? We should support all the athletes of the Filipinos," deklara ng Tacloban, Leyte-native na si Palami.

"But, as it is, sa totoo lang, for the Azkals, as it is, [it's] my money that I'm spending.

"I think it's also unfair to tell me where to spend it.

"I chose to spend it on a sport that I love and chose it to spend on a sport na I'm passionate about."

"But I don't think na it should be an obligation sa atin na iobliga tayo na tulungan ang lahat ng sports.

"Because after that, mayroon ding ibang sports na kailangang tulungan.

"And we've been actually helping other sports as well."

"In fact, itong Homeless World Cup, while it's still football, it's not Azkals. But we're here to support it."

"I guess that's how I want to put it," pagtatapos ng Azkals manager.

It's raining gold for pinoy dragon boat racers at worlds

Cash-strapped and unheralded, the Philippine dragon boat team won four more medals, three of which were gold, at the 10th World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Tampa, Florida.

With its four gold medals so far, the nation's dragon boat racers have already achieved more than any other PHL sports teams this year. And the championships are not over yet. The final events are scheduled on Sunday, US east coast time.

Around 2,000 athletes from 17 countries are competing for the sport's top honors in various events.

The PHL Dragon Warriors topped the 200 meter men’s small boat event Saturday, while the team won its third gold in the Premier Mixed Small Boat event in record-breaking fashion.

The Filipino paddlers registered a time of 57.07 seconds in the 200m mixed event to break the previous record of 1:00.719 seconds. Puerto Rico (1:03.393) and Italy (1:03.941) settled for the silver and bronze medals, respectively. The 200-meter events are the shortest distances in dragon boat racing and considered the sprints.

Team manager Army Maj. Harold Cabundoc, in a report at aired on 24Oras weekend, said the dragon boat paddlers finished the first and second heats with a time of 55 and 56 seconds, respectively.

The team won its fourth gold medal Saturday in 500-meter Premier Open Mixed Event.

The Philippines won its first gold in the 1000-m small boat event with a record-breaking time of 4:57.13.

They added a silver medal after placing second to Russia (54.42 seconds) in the All Comers 200m small boat event with a time of 55.17 seconds. Canada placed third (56 seconds).

The team previously won the men's 200-meter gold with a record time of 42.16 seconds in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The team successfully defended its world title in the 2009 edition in Prague, Czech Republic with another record-breaking performance (40.02 seconds).

Elated dragon boat fans have been asking, "Where is the love?" UP lawyer Ted Te tweeted Sunday morning:

"You shouldn't be able to argue with success. So why no mad scramble to put the PHL team on billboards? No Phil-whathisface, that's why."

It was an obvious reference to mestizo Azkals player Phil Younghusband, a billboard superstar whose team was eliminated by Kuwait in the World Cup qualifiers.

The country's most popular team sports, basketball and football, have not garnered anywhere near the kind of success that the dragon boat racers have achieved on the world stage in Tampa, Florida.

Many of the national-team paddlers are enlisted men and women in the Philippine Army, but they participated in Florida with little government support, their airfare mostly paid for by private sponsors.– JVP/HS, GMA News

Phil Cobra Dragon Boat rowers scoop 2 gold medals in world meet

The Philippines' rowers made waves as they won two gold medals in the 9th World Dragon Boat Racing Championships that ended Sunday in Prague, Czech Republic.

The Filipino rowers retained their title in the Premier Open 200-meter event and for good measure, ruled the Premier Mixed 200m competition to cap a successful campaign.

“Our paddlers did their best and succeeded in making the Philippines bigger in the world of dragon boat," Nestor Ilagan, technical director of the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation, said in a text message from Prague.

Engaged in a tight race with perennial rival China early on, the RP men’s team made a big push at the homestretch en route to winning their second straight Premier Open 200m crown in the biennial world meet.

The nationals negotiated the distance in 40.022 seconds, improving the 42.16-second clocking they submitted in winning the same event in the 2007 World Championships in Sydney, Australia.

China, the same squad that settled for the silver medal two years ago, was a fraction of a second slower than the Philippines with its 40.125 seconds. Rowers from the host country took the bronze with their 42.307 seconds.

On their way to the crown, the Filipinos topped heat 1 with a time 43.346 seconds to advance outright into the semifinal phase then submitted the fastest clocking in the semis (40.486 seconds) to lead the six qualifiers to the finals.

Complementing that successful title-retention campaign was another golden performance in the Mixed Open 200m division.

The country’s top male and female rowers joined forces to sweep past their rivals from Asia, the US and Europe with a winning time of 43.507 seconds. The Filipinos were more than two seconds faster than their closest rival, China, which clocked 45.951 seconds. Settling for a distant third was Germany with 48.635 seconds.

Not as successful, though, were the Philippines’ bets in the Premier 2,000m and 1,000m events, settling for ninth and fifth places, respectively.

Still, with the two gold medals they won in this year's world championships, the Filipino Dragon Boat rowers improved on their previous harvest of one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. - GMANews.TV

The team successfully defended its world title in the 2009 edition in Prague, Czech Republic with another record-breaking peformance (40.02 seconds).

Two thousand paddlers from 17 countries are competing at this year's event, happening from Wednesday till Monday. The Philippines will be up against countries like Singapore, Australia, Germany, Hungary, Brazil and defending champions China.

Events to be contested are 200-, 500-, 1,000- and 2,000-meter races.

On Friday night (Philippine time), the Filipinos will compete in the Premier Mixed 200m Small Boat event against Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago. Philippine Cobra Dragon Boat eyes third world championship title

The Cobra Philippine Dragon Boat Federation team flew to the United States Monday night to defend its title in the 10th International Dragon Boat World Championship starting Wednesday in Tampa, Florida.

Training in long distances, the Cobra-PDBF paddlers, who won the men’s 200-meter race in record-breaking fashion the past two editions of the event, are looking to add the men’s 500m, 1000m and mixed 500m to their medal collection.

Cobra-PDBF coach Nestor Ilagan said the team is prepared for the challenge, having trained on extended distances and rowing thrice a day from Manila Yacht Club to Manila Ocean Park with premium on speed.

“We’ve trained hard for this and anticipated all possible conditions at sea,” said Ilagan.
In the 2007 world championships, the PDBF won the gold in the men’s 200m in Sydney, Australia, and set a world record of 42.16 seconds.

The team retained its world title two years later in Prague, Czech Republic, erasing its old record and setting a new mark of 40.02 seconds. The Philippines also won the mixed division 200m in the 2009 world championships.

Standing in the PDBF’s way for another shot at glory are teams from Canada, US, Germany, China, Australia and Czech Republic.

“These countries are the strong contenders for the title in both short and long distances,” said Ilagan, who is confident that the 25 champion paddlers have the edge in their discipline and determination to win.

With these values, the paddlers have gained the respect of supporters Cobra Energy Drink and Philippine Airlines.

“We are pleased that Cobra-PDBF now has the opportunity to win more titles, set more world records and bring more glory and honor for our country,” said Mike Ngo, Asia Brewery’s AVP for Marketing, Media and Budget.

Catch the Cobra-PDBF race updates in Florida daily at Studio 23 during weekdays (2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m.) and weekends (1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 7 p.m.) starting today until Aug. 8.
“We’re hoping to be reaffirmed as the world’s best,” said Ilagan. “The prayers and support from all Filipinos will inspire us to work harder and win more medals for our country.”
