PEP:
More than 80 of the most beautiful and most gorgeous women from around the world will gather in Sao Paolo, Brazil this Tuesday (September 13) for the much-awaited coronation night of the Miss Universe 2011.
But prior to the pageant night, the candidates took part in the National Costume showcase last September 7. Shamcey wore a sparkling terno created by Brazilian designer Alfredo Barazza. It had a skirt decorated with golden butterflies while she wore a crown similar to the ones worn during Santacruzan.
Filipinos are all out in supporting Philippines' bet Shamcey Supsup especially after last year's candidate Venus Raj placed 4th runner up. Pageant aficionados have been campaigning to vote for Shamcey in the Miss Universe official online polls since the Miss Universe Organization will be giving a sure semi-finalist slot to the candidate who will top the worldwide fan votes.
Shamcey was crowned Bb. Pilipinas Universe in April 2011 and since then she's been preparing really hard for the competition. Hailing from General Santos City, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines-Diliman with a degree in Architecture and topped the June 2010 Architecture Licensure Examination in July 2010.
Whoever wins the crown this year shall continue what reigning Ximena Navarrete of Mexico has started which includes traveling around the world to help educate students from local schools about HIV/AIDS.
This year's Miss Universe pageant will be held in Credicard Hall in Brazil, host to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olymic games, and will be hosted by NBC's Today host Natalie Morales and Bravo's Watch What Happens: Live host Andy Cohen.
Filipina singer-thespian Lea Salonga will sit as one of the judges along with Helio Castroneves, Connie Chung, Isabeli Fontana, Vivica Fox, Adrienne Maloof, and Amelia Vega.
The 89 candidates of the 2011 Miss Universe pageant already took part in the preliminary round that would determine whether or not they would make the cut as semi-finalists.
Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Shamcey Supsup is currently in Sao Paolo, Brazil to represent the country in the hopes of taking home the coveted crown. The Philippines has produced two Miss Universe titleholders in the past: Ms. Gloria Diaz (who won in 1969) and Margarita Moran (who won in 1973).
This is the first time in its 60-year history that the Miss Universe contest is held in Brazil. This year also marks the first time that fans in represented countries are allowed to vote online for their favorite candidate.
The candidates are judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview portion. The 15 ladies who received the highest total scores will be announced on September 12 during the main event as semifinalists. The winner of the global poll will also join the cut.
During the event, the commentator shared interesting facts about each contestant.
As Shamcey walked on the stage wearing her bikini, the host revealed:
"She has been sketching and painting as two of her hobbies. She had her
first art exhibit when she was just 15 and sold all four of her paintings on display."
For the evening gown competition, Shamcey wore a beige colored long gown that had see-through material for her legs. The commentator said about Shamcey: "Ms. Philippines has never been into contact sports. This 25-year-old beauty prefers to go bowling and once even participated in a tournament."
During the preliminary pageant competition, the Miss Congeniality award went to Miss Montenegro while the Miss Photogenic award went to Miss Sweden.
