K-pop quintet the Wonder Girls are busy making their first TV movie in the US that will be shown on American network TeenNick.
JYP Entertainment said the Wonder Girls will star on “Wonder Girls at the Apollo," which is set for airing in the first quarter of 2012.
“We are especially excited about this TV-movie which will be the first time ever for Asian singers to take up lead roles in a US TV show,” JYPE said in an announcement posted online.
The six-part miniseries will be co-produced by JYP Entertainment and NCredible, owned by Nick Cannon, husband of pop diva Mariah Carey.
“Wonder Girls at the Apollo” is a story about the battle between the Wonder Girls and School Gyrls, a girl band managed by Cannon’s company.
JYP Entertainment said the Wonder Girls will finish filming in October and will start promoting the TV movie in December.
The release of the Wonder Girls' US debut album will coincide with the airing of the TV movie. This is in addition to releasing a new Korean album in November this year.
“The Wonder Girls have been preparing for their US debut for three long years. We sincerely apologize for the lateness of the Wonder Girls’ next album,” JYP Entertainment said.
In 2009, the girls launched their career in the US with the English version of their hit song “Nobody” that was released in June that year. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 76 in October 2009.
The soundtrack for the “Wonder Girls at the Apollo” will be included in the Wonder Girls’ US debut album.
JYP Entertainment said “we believe that the Wonder Girls actively appearing on TV will significantly help promote of their albums, and aid in their overall success.”
After filming finishes in October, the Wonder Girls will release a new Korean album in November.
JYP Entertainment said it is excited about the Wonder Girls’ US debut.
“We are delighted that the Wonder Girls will be making their US debut with such strong foundation and support. The Wonder Girls will display the BEST music, the BEST dancing, and the BEST acting through ‘Wonder Girls at the Apollo’ so please support them and their movie,” the agency said.
