Katy Perry posted a new career milestone this week when her latest single “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” reached the top spot of the Billboard Pop Songs chart.
Perry smashed previous records held by Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake by putting up five number one singles from a single album on Billboard’s pop songs airplay ranking chart.
“Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” is the latest single from the singer’s “Teenage Dream” album. Her previous chart toppers include “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, “Firework,” “E.T.,” and the title track. Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake previously held the record for garnering four number ones from a single album, respectively.
At the moment, Katy Perry is positioning herself for a bigger honor, and that is to match the late king of pop, Michael Jackson's Billboard’s historic Hot 100 Singles chart record. The latter currently holds the record of being the only artist to have posted five number one’s from a single album, specifically from his 1987 album “Bad.” The Hot 100 chart combines airplay and sales rankings, making it the bigger catch for artists.
Expectations were high that Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” would make it to the top of this week’s Hot 100 and tie Jackson’s mark. But Perry was blocked by LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” which currently sits at peak position for the fifth straight week already.
According to prognosticators, Perry still has a good shot at number one next week, owing to an increase in the song's airplay this week, even as it sales has slightly declined.
