Philippines: Home of Beauty Queens, FACTS and TRIVIA

MB:

MB Entertainment steps back in time and reminisces those winning answers of a few of today’s beauty-queens-turned-celebrities and gives a little update on what has become of these celebrated beauties.

Ruffa Gutierrez, 2nd Runner-Up

Miss World 1993 held at Sun City Entertainment Centre in Sun City, South Africa

Miss World Question: How would you tell a girl who’s suffering from low self-esteem to feel better about herself?

I’ll tell her to believe in herself because it’s not only physical beauty that’s important but also inner beauty. Like what the Little Prince said, "What is essential is invisible to the naked eye." And I believe that character and personality are more important than physical beauty.

Miss Universe 1999 held at Chaguaramas Convention Centre, Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago

Miss Universe Question: If Miss Universe were to become pregnant during her reign, should she be allowed to continue as Miss Universe?

It’s a very difficult situation to be in and ah, ah, I believe that if Miss Universe, if ever she becomes pregnant, I believe she should continue with her reign if she has been a good example to be a Miss Universe, if she has pursued all the… all the goals that she has, that she had, in the first place. And I believe that she should continue.

Toughest Competition

No less than, Miss Universe 1999, Mpule Keneilwe Kwelagobe, who became a human health rights activist fighting against HIV/AIDS and for women and the youth of her country to have greater access to sexual reproductive education and services.

Update

After her triumphant stint at the pageant, Quiambao began a new career working as a TV host, actress and endorser. In 2004, she married Italian businessman Claudio Rondinelli and left for Hong Kong. The two-year marriage eventually fell apart and Quiambao went back to the Philippines in 2006 to resume her career.

Precious Lara Quigaman, Grand winner

Miss International 2005 held at Koseinenkin Hall, Tokyo,Japan

Miss International Question: What do you say to the people of the world who have typecasted Filipinos as nannies?

I take no offense on being typecasted as a nanny. But I do take offense that the educated people of the world have somehow denigrated the true sense and meaning of what a nanny is. Let me tell you what she is. She is someone who gives more than she takes. She is someone you trust to look after the very people most precious to you – your child, the elderly, yourself. She is the one who has made a living out of caring and loving other people. So to those who have typecasted us as nannies, thank you. It is a testament to the loving and caring culture of the Filipino people. And for that, I am forever proud and grateful of my roots and culture.

Toughest Competition
