From: Conservative Alerts Sent: Thursday, August 11, 2011 Subject: Super Congress Equals Super Taxes
A torpedo is aimed at Americans' financial futures, and will soon strike if members of Congress fail to stop the "Super Congress."
The 12 member Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, aka the Super Congress or super committee that was added to the debt ceiling compromise is unconstitutional, because it gives all legislative power to select members of Congress who will have the authority to hike Americans' taxes without debate, without amendments, without a filibuster, and without constituents' input.
Essentially, the Super Congress is tasked with the job of imposing tax hikes on hard-working Americans, who are already paying taxes, and cutting defense spending by 50%.
Three members of the unconstitutional Super Congress have been selected by Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), who has appointed Democratic Sens. Patty Murray (WA), Max Baucus (MT), and John Kerry (MA).
Last week, left-wing members of Congress said that the Super Congress is necessary because "extremist" members of the Tea Party, who are "too radical and inexperienced to compromise," refused to agree to tax hikes. Then Sen. Kerry, who has now been appointed to the super committee, attacked the Tea Party by claiming that their opposition to tax hikes led to the Standard and Poor's decision to reduce the U.S.'s credit rating to AA+ by calling it a "Tea Party downgrade." In reality, the opposite is true. The problem is that an ever expanding and encroaching government has failed to stop their spending addiction, and members of the Tea Party simply shed light on the problem.

Now is the time to stand up and demand that your Representatives and Senators dismantle the Super Congress. Don't wait for the media to sound the alarm. Your financial future is at stake, and three of the 12 members of the tax hike committee have already been selected.
If this committee isn't stopped, then Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) will have until Tuesday to select nine other members to the committee.
This means that McConnell and Boehner must appoint Conservative fiscal hawks if they are going to thwart the Left's effort to raise taxes on Americans who are already paying more than their fair share.
Although the supposed objective of the Super Congress is to slash $1.2 trillion from the budget over the next decade, Politico reports that Sen. Reid said he wants the committee to generate "new tax revenue" and added that he is opposed to Sen. McConnell or Speaker Boehner appointing anyone to the committee who is opposed to tax hikes.
"Members of Congress should have the opportunity to debate the items that are sent to them, and to modify items that are sent to them. To force them to vote just 'yes' or 'no' with no debate - not to follow the rules of the House, which permits amendments, and not to follow the rules of the Senate, which permits a filibuster, is such a substantial removal of the authority the Constitution..." said Judge Andrew Napolitano, Fox News' senior judicial analyst.
"The Super Congress will take power away from Congress, and give it to this group. The Constitution says all legislative power shall be in the Congress -- not some; and it doesn't say that Congress can give the power away."
This unconstitutional Super Congress would supersede both Houses of Congress and give all legislative power to 12 members who will craft bills behind closed doors, away from C-SPAN cameras and Capitol Hill reporters, and fast-track legislation, making their bills amendment and filibuster-proof.
If the Super Congress isn't stopped, then there will no longer be any debates, amendments, filibusters, constituent input, and thus, no checks and balances -- further distancing members of Congress from those who elected them to office.

As Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), explains, the Super Congress represents nothing more than a way to disenfranchise the majority of Congress by denying them the chance for meaningful participation in the crucial areas of entitlement and tax reform."
Sen. Reid also said that the powerful Super Congress will have unlimited power: "There are no constraints ... They can look at any program we have in government, any program. ... It has the ability to look at everything."
The Obama administration loves the Super Congress, because it will keep spending decisions out of reach of fiscal Conservatives and budget hawks who are not on board with Obama's tax-and-spend and defense-slashing agenda.
If the Super Congress were to deadlock or if members of Congress reject the Super Congress's cuts and tax hikes, then automatic across the board spending cuts of at least $1.2 trillion would go into effect - this means that defense would automatically be cut by 50% ($600 billion in cuts to defense right off the bat).
Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that much will be risked, "if the political leadership of this country decides that it must reduce the investment in defense by hundreds of billions of dollars."
"This approach risks grave damage to our national security," said John Bolton, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. "Any cuts to defense will be catastrophic. ... Defense spending is not just another wasteful government program. Subjecting it to potentially massive, debilitating cuts is rolling the dice in perilous times internationally. Adam Smith himself wrote in The Wealth of Nations: 'the first duty of the sovereign' [is] protecting the society from the violence and invasion' of others."

Members of Congress need to hear from you...TODAY!
Sincerely, Tony Adkins, Conservative Action Alerts
P. S. The unconstitutional 12 member Super Congress will have the power to craft legislation that other members would only be allowed to vote 'yes' or 'no' on. There would be no more debate, no more amendments, no tabling legislation, no ability to filibuster, and no more checks and balances.
