ISIS KING AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL QUEEN

For its 17th cycle, America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) is giving 14 fan favorites from previous seasons a second chance at the title – including Isis King from season 11, the show's only transgender contestant. Isis was the first trans woman to compete on ANTM and became one of the most visible transgender people on television.

In 2007, Isis appeared in “Born In The Wrong Body,” which documented the lives of transgender teens from across the United States. Isis began hormone replacement therapy in 2007 as part of her transitioning process.  Tyra Banks arranged for Isis to have sexual reassignment surgery which was conducted on 2009 and was successful.

Isis has an AA degree from the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Isis was living at the Ali Forney Transitional Living Program when she learned about an upcoming photo shoot for ANTM. Isis asked art director, Jay Manuel, whether she could be accepted, as a girl if she were to audition. Tyra Banks encouraged her to audition based on her stellar performance in the photo shoot. She became one of 14th finalists for Cycle 11.

Isis had already been runway modeling for 7 years before participating in ANTM. She appeared on the Tyra Banks Show to discuss her story and also on Larry King Live. Isis inclusion on ANTM was called an “unprecedented opportunity” by Neil Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

New York magazine called Isis the cause célèbre of ANTM.  Executive producer Ken Mok stated that casting Isis was in support of “redefining what beauty is,” one of the original missions for the show.
