It could appear to a skeptical person that this is but a prelude to defining other geographical areas with potential for 'special controls.' Soon, domestic gang activity or designating 'special classes of "dangerous" people' in cities might lead to similar 'stroke of the pen' restrictions targeting them and of course, what would his 'mighty pen' scribble if 'the natives' were to get restless and 'street organizing' was to get out of hand around the country?

More erosion of Congress’s authority and the 2nd Amendment

Here at the Mesquite Local News we believe in gun control:
Take a strong stance. Use a high hand grasp and a hard grip. After focusing on your target focus on the front sight and use a smooth, rearward roll of the trigger to fire.
That’s “proper” gun control.
But others have a different target than accuracy when it comes to gun control and that’s to control the gun owner, buyer and seller.
Yes, the Obama Administration is at it again.
Last week, the administration announced that it’s preparing new, gun-safety measures. The announcement coincided with the six-month anniversary of the Tucson, Ariz., massacre – never let a crisis or tragedy go to waste.
While the Brady Bill, following the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, was debated and passed by the U.S. Congress, this broader measure is to be done by executive order – an easier way to nibble on the edges of the 2ndAmendment.
The order is to place greater restrictions on the sale of weapons in states near the U.S.-Mexican border, and impose tougher penalties for those who violate certain guns laws. It won’t apply, of course, to ATF and Justice Department gun sales to Mexican drug cartels. But this isn’t about that sloppy “Project Gunrunner” program.
But it is about the White House usurping Congress’ role under the U.S. Constitution as the crafter of our laws, be they about guns or health care.
Under this new Obama-mandated order federal firearms licensees in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California must report when a single buyer purchases more than two semi-automatic in a five-day period that have detachable magazines and a caliber greater than .22.
This will mean ATF will be generating about 18,000 investigative reports a year on the sales. But if no skullduggery is found within two years, the personal and allegedly private information will be deleted
This expansion of the gun laws also is to establish a national electronic system to make background checks for handgun buyers quicker and simpler. Tougher sentences for those using “straw buyer” to avoid the checks also is a new add-on adopted administratively earlier this year.
All this at a time when the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is probing “Project Gunrunner,” making congressional passage of more gun laws difficult in light of the failure of the scheme, which handed the cartels weapons used to commit crimes and kill federal agents.
Republican officeholders and the NRA are screaming foul, but the White House says sidestepping Congress, is a matter of “common-sense measures [to] improve Americans’ safety and security while fully respecting Second Amendment rights.”
Some might call that hogwash, as do we.
But there’s some good news for Nevada gun-owners and sellers… maybe.
Jan and Mike Sullivan of Guns & Guitars, tell the MLN the 2011 Nevada Legislature passed some truly “common-sense measures.”
Under the proposed changes in the state’s gun laws, holders of CCW permits (those allow Nevadans to carry concealed weapons) would be allowed to pack all semi-automatic pistols – not just the ones listed on the CCW application. And any CCW permit holder need not pay another $25 for subsequent Brady background checks when buying an additional firearm. And Nevada FFL (Federal Firearms License) holders may now sell rifles and shotguns to residents of any U.S. state, not only bordering states.
Laws passed by the Legislature usually take effect the following July 1, as was the intention with these modifications.
But that must wait. The ATF – and possibly some other overly protective agency – will have to sign off on the laws before they can take effect.
The new target date likely will be Oct. 1, unless…
We don’t know what that “unless” might be. But when it comes to our 2ndAmendment rights, there’s more sharpshooters with them in their scopes than on a typical Afghan battlefield.
However one new add-on to the CCW law did go into effect July 1. Applicants now need qualify only with one semi-automatic pistol model to be permitted to carry any model.
We urge ATF, the White House and any others trying to protect the world from gun-owners, to allow the people of Nevada, through their Legislature, to pass laws that work here.
