I think that over the past year or so, I've gotten to know a tremendous group of writers. Some are published, some are aspiring like me, some write romance, others write sci-fi or fantasy, YA, or other genres. I've got a tremendous mix of talent from which to turn to for inspiration, guidance, friendship, or help...
However.
When I get to know other writers, and read their work, I have certain standards that I won't cross. I've read the work of several other writers, especially since the conference, and I've been overwhelmed (and underwhelmed) by the level of talent I've been introduced to. But I read other people's work for just that reason: To read. Period.
I have no interest in taking ideas away from people, imitating themes or books or characters, or copying them in any way. If I am going to succeed at this writing gig, it will be because I created something. Not because I genre jumped and rode the coat tails of another writer. Not because I abandoned a sinking ship, and decided to "create" a new story that sounds mysteriously like someone else's work. Everything I become known for will be from my own head.
I wish I could say the same thing for every other writer I know. Not all of them are adopting such shady habits. Many of them are skilled and talented enough on their own. One or two of them, Meggan and Jess, are literally on the verge of being published, because they literally have talent oozing from their pores right now! But others...I can't say the same for. Others seem to be acting in a way that raises my eyebrows. Not that they are plagerizing...but...
Let's just say, I'm cautiously optimistic.
I am certain that all of the writers I've met will make the right choice, and create their own storylines and characters. I am certain that they know my work is copyright, and that if I see my work or my ideas in writing elsewhere, I will take them down until their pocketbook and reputation is dust. I am certain that my warning isn't needed.
However, in case it IS needed....
Please be aware that I copyright my work for a reason, and that I will enthusiastically fight for every word I've written. Mmmmmm, kay?
And so ye have been warned.
The others? Well, keep on doing what you've been doing. You're a seriously talented and amazing bunch of chicks who are going to be famous sooner rather than later. I am baffled at your level of talent. No, seriously. This warning is not aimed at you.
