Poem For Nicole Kidman

Nicole

Immortal Figurehead, gazing through time.
Queen of sorrow,
Brave Lass, ever vigilant, ever loyal;
still guiding your masts to the unknown port
that now panders to your lost, beloved and weary sailors
with visions of the past, and in whispers,
only in their memories.

Waves of silk and remonstrance
are Thy tresses,
russet and gold.

Surround me with Their fire.
Swallow me whole,
and lead me to the bottom of the waves,

there to dwell forever;
I Your Captain;
Your King;
King of the unrequited dream.

*Above is a picture I took of the figurehead of the once Tall Ship, The Regina Maris. What remains of her now sits on dry land in Glen Cove Harbor. I went to visit her there once in December of 2008, and it was a sad visit.

In the late 1990's and early few years of this Millenium, the Regina Maris used to be at the dock in Greenport Harbor. I was even aboard her when she was still afloat, and Christmas lights were strung on her rigging during Holiday Season. She was in need of very expensive repairs and could not be saved, so was transported to Glen Cove and sank in shallow water, until dismantled and made into a sort of partially reconstructed "sculpture" on dry land.

I shared an account of my visit, and this pic with a Facebook group of former people that have fond memories of the Regina Maris.

If my poor attempts at poetry can be said to be inspired, then I will say that my awe of this figurehead conjured up images of classic statues from Antiquity and classical paintings etc,. and when trying to find today's embodiment of classic and transcendent intelligence and beauty,  Nicole Kidman kept coming to mind. Someone to be put on a Pedestal, and worshiped from afar etc. So that is the nexus. OK, I'll admit--I'm smitten. But I have excellent taste, so there.

Here is a very sad Irish ballad, and an all time favorite of mine as well,  sung by Mary Black; and also an inspiration. The mood seems to fit the fate of my poor Lady above.

 Such a sad Ballad.

Mary Black sings so beautifully.

And my poor Lady, my poor Figurehead above, is so sad. I was back to see her a couple of months ago, and plan to take some more pics, and to also reassure her that she is still very Beautiful, and still very much loved by her lost sailors, and by all who have lost their way in this world.

Is there ever a place for some of us in this world?

But go back to the present now. Go here.... to find the College Transcript:
