Okay, so I just finished another book by Jane Porter, and I loved it!
There was something about the character of Marta that I completely related to. I am not from the wealthy Bellevue community that Marta is from, but I am involved in a church that cranks out tons and tons of what I lovingly refer to as
Stepford Wives.
(As a disclaimer: Most of the women I am friends with are my friends because they do not meet that criteria. I usually tend to bond with the women who stray from the beaten path, much like myself. However, many of the other women I see every week are just that:
Stepford Wives. Beautiful, wealthy, perfect kids, perfect cars, impeccable houses....enough to make a ragamuffin like me jealous. And yes, I just admitted that I am jealous. Because I am. Anyone who can have 5 kids, wear a size four, have a perfect house, and make homemade bread and jam twice a week without ruining their professional manicure that I cannot afford...yes, I will be jealous of them. Completely. But the women I roll with...they're pretty cool. They're all misfits in their own way, like I am.)
Anyway, I was totally enamored with Marta. She reminded me of
me. I want a motorcycle. In fact, my nerd and I have plans to spend a summer traveling route 66 and the California coast on bikes once the kids are out of the house. And I never, ever dress the right way. Just ask every woman who sees me all week. And I work all the time on a job that is incredibly important to me, despite the fact that I'm not getting paid, and I have no intention of giving up my career for my career as a wife and mother. I would rather die. And my hair? Oy, let's not go there....
Marta and I bonded.
I, too, am an odd mom out.
If you think you can relate, go get this book. It will not disappoint.
